Driving With Uncle Wenger

Not dull with AW driving
By Celine Dion
February 5 2011

I received this article from Celine Dion before the Newcastle game, I want to stress that, it was a day before. It was delayed because the author wanted to polish it up a bit. At half time today he was wondering if it would make sense. Unfortunately at 4:50pm it proved to be spot on. You can never accuse Celine of last gameitis.  Enjoy the ride, sorry read. Boris Mellor

Celine Dion writes:

I have a recurring dream, where I am in a car, being driven by someone else. Sometimes a family member, sometimes a friend. We start out normally enough, cruising sedately down the road, but sooner or later they become possessed by some kind of demon, and start to drive erratically, faster and faster, hunched over the steering wheel with a maniacal grimace, shouting and swearing at the passers-by.

Eventually my fear overcomes me and I leap from the vehicle, at which point I normally wake up. The subconscious origins of this dream are obvious enough, in normal waking life, I don’t actually drive. I am otherwise successful (relatively) but I don’t drive, I don’t like driving, I hope I will never have to drive.

Maybe, these nightmares stem from a real life situation etched deeply in my memory when, aged around 18, our friend Jason used to drive us to Arsenal down the M4. As Jason pushed his motor vehicle further and further past the 100mph mark, weaving in and out of the motorway traffic, even the hardiest passenger used to lean forward and suggest he er... ‘slowed down a bit’. To which Jason would invariably reply ‘F*ck off....’

Driving with Wenger

Now, dear reader, the rather basic imagery of this article might need some development, so let me bring the subject matter inevitably towards that issue so very dear to all our hearts, Arsenal FC. I believe I may have made a similar point many times before, so I don’t want to bore anyone, but once upon a time I would have considered Wenger a very careful and good driver. The sort to maintain impeccable road standards, wear a tidy pair of brown leather driving gloves, the sort to probably apply (successfully) to the ‘Advanced Motorists Association’, like my Dad.

Every season, for as far back as I can remember, we faithfully pack our suitcases and sandwiches and clamber into the back of our car, for another holiday trip with Uncle Wenger. We are trying to recapture the golden holidays of our youth, where the beaches were long and sandy the sun was high in the sky and summer seemed to last a thousand days. We chattered excitedly in the back seat; THIS year, THIS year, it’s bound to be as good as the ‘old days’, Uncle Wenger says so.

He’s packed our luggage, filled the car with petrol, and packed some apples and sandwiches for the journey. Probably not as much petrol luggage and sandwiches as our neighbours, but hey, Uncle Wenger’s been doing these trips for a long time, he knows what he’s doing. Everything starts off nicely; we make ground quickly, even though we don’t have the best car. The loud mouth brash neighbours might be slightly ahead in their flashy vehicles, but we are all quietly confident that we will get there on time and in good shape.

Then, a few knockbacks and perhaps a flat tyre or two, some years, even a few hours spent rather embarrassingly standing by the side of the motorway, a few angry words with our beloved Uncle, and its back on the road. Normally, we do arrive at our destination, although it’s a bit late and a lot of the other cars have arrived first. Never mind, we spend a passable holiday and return home with our faith in Uncle Wenger largely unshaken, with the exception of a few dissenting voices from the very back of the vehicle.

However, it’s a long time since Uncle Wenger gave us a really GOOD holiday. And his promises towards doing so grow more and more outlandish every year. Our car grows older and older and whilst some bits of it (mainly at the front) work very well indeed, with plenty of spare parts, some of the bits at the back are rather, er... cheap. With no spare parts at all. Never mind though, I am not a mechanic, so let’s just see how it goes. I’m sure he knows what he’s doing.

You join me now dear reader, just after half way through this years’ journey. . To be fair, the trip this year has been largely better than most, give or take a bit of a traffic jam at West Bromwich and a prang on the Tottenham High Road. So we’ve all given him the benefit of the doubt. I have deliberately refrained from commenting until this point, just looking out of the window. Uncle Wenger keeps turning round from his steering wheel, and assuring us that this year’s holiday will be the best one ever.

But he’s not looking at the road. We’ve got an easy run in to the coast Uncle Wenger, but the cars got bits hanging off it. And now, get this - we’ve just hurtled through the services without stopping to buy so much as a sausage roll, Uncle Wenger has dismissed our suggestions with a Gallic wave of the hand. Shopping in the motorway services, mid journey, he explains, angrily, is TOO EXPENSIVE. And anyway, that service station didn’t even look like it had anything in it.

We ask Uncle Wenger if he would like to give us a song. But he says no, he’s only got one, and he can’t find it. Couldn’t we have bought some more at the services, we ask?

Uncle Wenger ignores us.

Uncle Wenger turns round and assures us that we are in ‘great shape’, and throws us a few Murray Mints. Glancing out of the back window, I notice that one of the back wheels seems to be hanging off but Uncle Wenger doesn’t seem to care. Uncle Wenger has that maniacal glint in his eye.

‘Aren’t we trying to take in rather too many miles Uncle Wenger?’ we ask.
‘NO’ he shouts, angrily.

He puts his foot down and the car goes even faster.

‘We seem to be travelling through Newcastle Uncle Wenger, and several of our passengers are missing’, we plead.

‘Stop bloody moaning’ he shouts

Uncle Wenger is travelling at an unbelievable speed now, the car is rattling and spluttering. The passengers grip each other with fear. This was a holiday with such high expectations, such great potential, why won’t Uncle Wenger stop and at least give the car a polish and a quick service??

‘YOU ARE GOING TO RUN OUT OF PETROL’ I plead.

Uncle Wenger turns on me angrily, he has a feral look and there is a devilish red glint in his eye...‘IF YOU DONT TRUST ME, GET OUT OF THE CAR’ screams Uncle Wenger, his hands leaving the steering wheel altogether as he tries to grip me by the throat...

I leap from the car, and land battered and bruised on the motorway.

And then I wake up.

Thing is, when you get into Uncle Wengers’ car, as we all do every year, it doesn’t matter what you think, it doesn’t matter what suggestions you have, it doesn’t matter what you try and say to him. If you don’t like the way he drives it, you really can f*ck off. And despite our advancing years, despite the very clear possibility that this might be one of our last holidays, most are happy, no matter what the disappointments, to give Uncle Wenger yet another chance, again and again, because the truth is, we don’t have any other Uncles, or none that we trust at any rate.

Who would want to holiday with anyone else, it’s always so exciting, Uncle Wenger of nowadays is a mad gambler, a chancer, taking crazy risks and careering wildly from side to side of the motorway. Sometimes he executes daring and brilliant moves, this year, more than most, but we all know that sometimes we come to a stuttering stop on the hard shoulder (who could forget last year’s visit to Spain).

Whether we end up upon the golden sands, or crashed into a tree, like most years, most of all, we all know, it’s either Uncle Wenger’s way, or the highway.

dont worry, Uncle Wenger will log in later, he always likes to see how his nephews are getting on

its just a pity the highway partrol men decide who to slow down and who to let speed on their merry way no matter how many illegal swerves and over taking manovuers they make, it seems they dont much care for the big fr sticker on the back of uncle wenger's left hand drive car

A wonderful article that really really explains our situation with Uncle wenger but you forgot to mention that uncle has reached an advanced state of self denial and that the team is suffering from a multiple personality disorder..the 2 combo are bad for business.. i really want to jump out of uncle wengers battered car but their is no other uncle nor ride that suits me...once you are in love it takes a lot to change..its either you are in love or you hate and it's the club i love..uncle wenger is not my type..never have been..a stubborn person that seems obtuse leaves a sour taste in my mouth

P.S.

did you see the future before writing this..ala newscastle game???

A great read CD. Really enjoyed it.

One thing though. You and I are tired of the bits falling off or breaking down in the back-end of our holiday transport. And yet you and I have been on these holiday trips many,
many times before. And I, for one, don`t want a change of scenery or transport. I just want the trips to be as memorable as they were 8 or 10 yrs ago.

But the one thing you`ve failed to mention in your travel log is `What would it be like not going on holiday at all.` As about 80% of the teams in the EPL don`t have a car, a map or a driver.

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Arsenal fc

Let’s keep making history

This team and Uncle Wenger have been enduring a slow motion car crash for the last five years.

i think he's doing brilliantly to keep up with the frequently souped up sports cars while driving a second hand ford fiesta. all the while driving with a bunch of screaming children on the back seat who lack any sense of perspective and are only interested in being given what they want right now with no concern for how difficult this is and no gratitude for someone who has given them everything

Why does he insist on driving a second hand ford fiesta, when he's been given plenty of money to buy something faster.

I swear I heard same thing from an Egyptian 10 years ago about Hosni Mubarak...if you aren't a Mubarak follower you aren't an Egyptian let alone patriotic one...

Too young to understand all these though..

we both know that's plainly untrue though. chelsea, united, city, madrid, barca, haven't just spent a little bit more than us... we're talking hundreds of millions. even if we spent every penny we possibly could, which is always sensible business, we would still only be able to get marginally better players. to get the absolute top level players who could come straight in and instantly make us the best team in the country we would have to spend money we simply don't have

i'm sure arsene would have loved david silva, or villa, or luiz but look at the prices they go for

players that wouldn't even get near our team are going for 20-30 mil

arsene's a bloody miracle worker and i for one am simply gonna sit back and wait for the day when this is clear to everyone. it will be a lot sweeter knowing i never called him a clueless @#$%& or whatever. i'm sure everyone will bask in our future success but they sure as @#$%& won't deserve it

a while ago it was wah wah we don't have a world class defensive midfield player, now we have the best in the league. in the summer it was wah wah hes gone mad we need a goal keeper - now everyone sensible accepts we have 3 good ones. now it's wah wah we can't possibly survive with 4 centre backs - maybe this will turn out to be true but @#$%& hell the way some people go on it's as if we've already lost ten matches in a row because we had to play squillaci and manuel almunia at centre back

ym thats classic Wengerdrone mentality - 'WHEN we win something I'm going to feel awfully smug because I wasnt rude about him'.

When or if he wins something (and I certainly dont mean the Rumbelows cup) I shall have as much right to celebrate as anyone else whether or not I slagged the manager from time to time.

Reason is, every season is a CAMPAIGN, it costs some of us several thousand pound to watch Arsenal over a season, each season in my view should be seen as the ultimate, we need to deliver during that season. Wenger throws seasons away like toilet roll - I have a strong feeling he may have thrown this one away because of lack of strength at the back - you mention the evolution of Song and so on but these things have happened over YEARS, during which we win nothing. I personally havent got the time the inclination or the money to wait for something that may or may not happen in 2014.

And stop the other Wengerdrone nonsense about Arsenal not having money for a David Luiz or whatever. Go up club level in the Emirates you've got half the board of every major investment bank in Europe up there supping £1000 bottles of champagne. Theres nothing poor about Arsenal except for the fans.

barcelona bring in more than a hundred million pounds more than us in a year. nonetheless they have managed to get themselves in financial trouble through overspending in the transfer market. this is despite the fact that they have by miles the best youth development system in the world to provide most of their first team

it is simply, unarguably, impossible to purchase the absolute top level proven players without spending money you don't have... for any football club. the only time it may be possible is if you get a huge transfer fee like liverpool got for torres. even that wasn't enough to cover the transfer fees of carroll and suarez (neither of whom are anything like proven but ho hum), never mind the wages. i don't know if you're one of those who likes to argue we never spent the money we got from adebayor and toure but we did... on arshavin, vermaelen and longer contracts for first team players

we have therefore developed a strategy of getting young players in and trying to develop a team ethic and style in order to compete with those spending money they don't have. this has ALREADY worked... we are above both chelsea and manchester city in the league. i'm confident in the long run it will produce more tangible results in the form of trophies. other big clubs, including man u, are already trying to copy our model. if the new rules coming in are enforced to any degree then our position is strengthened further

i think it's genuinely depressing that you can't take any pride in your club going against the grain like this and are so intent on us being just another club getting swept up in the media fuelled short termism of spending, spending, spending in order to chase immediate and unsustainable success. if we did go for the same sort of financial doping as chelsea and city, maybe get in a murderous ukrainian oligarch, then... here's the main point... IT STILL WOULDN'T GUARANTEE SUCCESS... only one team can win the league... no matter how many superstar players we bought there are no guarantees...once again look at city...

No one's asking for any superstars to be bought or hundreds of millions to be spent so going into financial trouble, for us, has got nothing to do with it.

Spending that extra million or two to get Alonso and we wouldn't have barely scampered to a 4th place finish, instead we had to rely on that useless c*nt Denilson all season.

A keeper last season and we would've won the league.

Not buying a centreback last month may well be the reason for our shortcoming this season - we shall see.

Precisely, there's a middle ground. That's precisely the point of the article, wenger works miracles to get where he does but like all obsessives won't break the habits of a lifetime to stiffen up the back. There's an imbalance in the team. Do you really think vermaelen clichy sagna chesneyy koscielny and djourou are the footballing equivalents of rvp Walcott cesc nasri arshavin etc. No they aren't. So I'm not asking for anyone to spend 90 million pound. Just recognise the weak spots ie songs position if he is injured and spend sensibly to cover for them. Stop gambling, that's what I am saying.

I think they're all excellent players actually

There's one right back in the world at the moment i'd definitely take over sagna

djourou hasn't lost in something like 25 matches and has become pretty comfortably our best defender i reckon

clichy seems to have got over his dip in form and has been quality again for months now

not sure what point you're trying to make here... replacing them all with better players would cost well over 100 million pounds... obviously it would be nice to have the equivalent of cesc fabregas in every position but it's not possible... is john o shea the wayne rooney of right backs? is gareth barry the carlos tevez of central midfielders? some players in a team are always going to be better than others

besides i'm pretty sure at the beginning of the season you and others on this board thougt walcott and nasri were @#$%&... yet now you list them as the quality of players we need to strive for... loads of people wanted us to sell rvp as well... it's all so fickle and shortsighted

you then make a completely separate point about needing back up for alex song... i know i won't convince you but i think diaby/wilshere and denilson/wilshere are more than adequate second choice partnerships
