Fans laugh as Gazides says Wenger accountable to them

blowing whose trumpet?
By Boris Mellor
June 13 2011

Two hundred Arsenal fans turned up to eagerly question the CEO over the seasons shortcomings. You have to hand it to Ivan he is a smooth operator, he doesn’t get huffy about difficult questions or questioners, he just smothers them with kindness. He gives careful attention to every question, and at the time the answer seems satisfactory, but like a Chinese meal, shortly afterwards you feel hungry for more.

Clearly fans were not happy with last season and there were some tough questions, questions that almost insisted Wenger should go. However, by the end of the evening, as Ivan got a good round of applause, it felt like the bland had been leading the bland.

Our hurt was Ivan’s hurt, and he shared our disappointment, and some players would be leaving and new ones arriving. Arsene pronounced Ah Sen (probably refers back to his days in Japan) had promised Ivan a busy summer.

One fan pointed out that unlike us mere fans, he Gazides was in a position to do something about it. Gazides insisted that Wenger was accountable to the fans, cue ironic laughter.

The club had shown great restraint in only two price rises in six years. Churn was low and waiting lists long. Silver prices were put up to help red members, to deter fans from hanging on to unused silvers. He seemed almost disappointed that more fans hadn’t left after season ticket price hike.

Gazides didn’t find Ah Sen stubborn, he was open to discussing issues; no doubt he had been amenable to putting prices up.

Just because Ah Sen didn’t criticise players in public it didn’t mean he was unaware of shortcomings. I could go on with this all day, but it explains why I am feeling somewhat dazed, and no doubt it will be on Arsenal.com tomorrow.  It won’t need editing Gazides is a spin meister, if he picked your pocket you would thank him for doing it so gracefully.

Yes there was dissent, a suggestion to bring back Dein was cheered, as was a question on Diaby wearing a shirt with a chicken in a basket on the front and other general issues of players disrespect. Of course Ivan was against such behaviour, he was worried about the disconnect between players and fans.

The debt is easily sustainable, paying it off quickly would not make sense as penalties are involved, and we have given away enough of them this season.

He told us Stan believes in shared ownership, 66% for him, and 27% or so for Usmanov, and the rest for AST and small share holders.

This was a well run event by AST and all credit to them for organising such an excellent forum, but it will be a long hard struggle to stop the billionaires marginalising the fans.

Who pays wages of 17 players out on loan?

Ivan said the club that took the player paid the wages, he inferred  that Arsenal did not pay any of the players wages once on loan

Did Wenger’s war chest include transfer fees and wages? Apparently they don’t separate it out, it’s all money. Of course if a player has a low price it is a different financial decision than one who has a high price. He claimed no club separates the money out. If you are none the wiser after that neither am I.

How much of last year’s fund did Arsene spend?

He didn’t spend all of it, but we couldn’t be told how much, they never intend to spend all of it as that would be living on the edge.

That’s where I will end, you see Ivan is a percentage player, a man who wants to avoid risks, balance all the different parts of the club and upset no one. I don’t hear any vision for the club; by that I don’t mean spending loads of money, but to create a hunger for trophies amongst managers and players. To create a new spirit and love for the club, to create a dynamic that can actually make history, not just live off past glories.

True Wenger created some of those glories, but it is increasingly becoming the distant past. Gazides has only platitudes, and the occasional plongitude, to offer. That’s why the meeting grew increasingly morose by the end. Any thought of rebellion died out in the old boy’s club atmosphere of “Emirates Stadium Events” as it read on the complimentary pen.

I guess that's why he get paid £1.7m a year or whatever it is.

Sounds like a bit of a non event.

Was it last year's Q&A that Wenger attended and got a little rattled at? Or have I made that up?

He answered some, he doesnt think Wenger is stubborn, or its time for him to go.
He thinks we are the most efficient spender on transfers and wages in the league. All I can say is the others must be $hyte

unless the questions were pre-arranged, then I would say it was a good event

AST had time to think of the questions they wanted answered, they could ave boxed him into a corner by making him answer questions that they thought wasn't satisfactory

but it seems like the answers were honest and how do you really argue with that

wenger accountable to us fan!!! dear me(Sm68)..we are in for the worst..not only another trophiless season but a season were we might as well blow a 6 goal lead.lol

here we were complaining about wenger being a spin doctor, a delusional stubborn man in an advanced stage of self denial, little did we know we had a smooth operator plus a spin meister who has the capability to pick our pockets while we throw him a well done party for it.(Sm103)

why do i have this sinking feeling that we are no longer a standard club but a business managed on frugal & thrift policies..more like jive records.lol

ONLY A FOOL WILL TRY TO MAKE US BEILEIVE THAT WENGER IS ACCOUNTABLE TO FANS... since arsenal fans are the most accomodating & understanding fans who will never boycott games..lets fasten our sit belts cos we are in for another torrid ride.

Can We Now Trust The Process 🤔🤷🏿‍♀️ or Should We Still Remain Cautious 🙇🏿‍♀️

As I have stated on another thread,I reckon another summer of little investment lies ahead.Wenger accountable to fans?your havin a larf,he is the least accountable manager I have known at any club, and therein lies the crux of the problem.
Its a fact the board love him because he seems not to want to spend, even during Deins days it seems he had to be pushed to spend, thats all very laudable. The problem is that the alternative, project build a team, has failed miserably.

his answers were very reasonable I thought. Not very interesting. These people do not get to the top of the tree by dropping big clangers in interview situations.

Most of us no longer believe that the club is interested in, or knows how to, win anything major, and does not provide value for money, but his agenda has to say he does, so he just goes off on that tack - its quite easy for him to stand up and argue the Wenger view. Theres nothing major to disagree with in his conference, you either swallow the entire package the club us putting across, or you dont. Nobodys going to stand up and call him a c*nt are they, so the show rolls on, and the club can tick a little box that says it speaks to its minor shareholders.

That's why I can't wrap my head around the reaction afterwards...you have the ability to ask any question you want and demand an answer...Gazides has no idea whats coming his way (well unless DeTimes has forgotten to send in his daily report)

you ask your question and get an answer that's satisfactory at the time, then complain about it afterwards

Gazides answered everything that was thrown his way...no one challenged his answers...instead questions like why are they saying its sold out when there are empty seats were thrown about

It's like at work, where I haven't had a pay rise in four years. I know that the company could afford it if it wanted to, and that the reason we don't get one is because we got taken over by a private equity firm. But when challenged the company just talks about stability, recession, and so on, and that's the end of the discussion. It's the bland language of super capitalism doing what it wants.

The letter that was read out, the comments on Identity were all quite damming. The comments on inability to defend, they cut the soundtrack so you could barely hear the reaction.
The chair, quite fairly, asked people to be disciplined and not repeat things and to be brief. You couldnt keep pressing the point home. It was question amd move on Gazides always had last word.

People complained about price rises and so on, but this was afairly well heeled audience so prices didnt create that much heat - failure did create heat but you cant really feel that on the video.
For example people laughe their head off and jeered at Wenger is accountable to fans - but you barely can hear that on sountrack.

But I think just as importantly Gazides got on top of the audience.

What qusetions could they ask? Are you going to sack Wenger? Well they as good as did that and Ivan fielded it.

suprised no asked

is 4th or gettint in CL the main target for the season

how many players did we actually bid for in jan or last summer

is it true we have youth and reserve players who have never played an FAPL game who are on contracts worth tens of thousands a week

why do we keep reserve players who cleary won't make it at arsenal if we are to be a top club

many think pat rice does nothing, can you explain his role

why do our team not applaude our fans after every game - home or away - win lose or draw

why have we not got a proper tv station(all the big clubs have one and so do chelsea) - only an online one, which is shite

why are we treated by our players on Arsenal.com to the same old bland "we must do better" and "we must learn" and worste of all "we need to not take small teams lightly" after every defeat or draw. We would rather they done more and said less

Actually, winning the title is the priority and 4th spot is the booby prize.

CL CUp is just a consolation prize.
FA CUp is a happenstance...like shooting at a duck and got a mackerel.
CC is just to shut fans up for demanding a piece of silverware, any silverware.

its not really like that though celine..your example is for employees, not customers...I'm not against the answers that Gazides put forward (don't see anything wrong with his answers)..my issue is the reaction by the people that were actually in a position to push for a satisfactory answer to some supposed searching questions...but didn't either ask the question or push for an answer that would be good enough for them

hardly a crucifixion is it? he is good at what he does, but he hasnt got a vision of how to create winners.
People are human, they wernt there to abuse him. As I have said check the qusetions carefully. He was forced to say Wenger is responsible to fans and he was jeered.

he was pushed over defence and need for better training, but the structure is such that he can always win. He come bacl last, he sums up, he has last word, not the questioner, there wasnt time for subsidiaries, time was an added pressure, it was like a queue at ticket office on Monday Morning.

he had to sort of admit that players not responsive to fans, he had to admit all sorts of things - watch it carefully. But he wont change anything, but he is right about one thing - if the fans turn on Wenger he will go.

not sure what some people think spin is

Spin is putting a positive view on what is viewed by many as a negative set of circumstances. In concentrating on what we CANT do (ie spend the money of Chelsea and Man City, apparently), the club and therefore Gazidis ignores what we COULD do better at. He alludes to it a bit here, but nevertheless everything is from a 'CANT DO, WHAT MORE CAN OU EXPECT' perspective. Thats spin.

nicely put CD. A fan complained about disrepect of players for club, so Gazides starts off that its a problem in whole of football.

I ask how much was spent out of transfer budget - and he says you cant live on the edge, you have to keep some in reserve.

hang on a minute reserves are kept in reserve fund not transfer fund.

I dont believe what he said on loan players either - its spin

good viewpoints celine and padre

but honestly some questions can only be answered certain ways..he quickly pointed out that certain questions couldn't be answered the way he might like to answer them because the media would run with it and can anyone really disagree with that

he also has to answer in a way that is acceptable to the fans and acceptable to the board...similar to the way he had to point out that Wenger talks to players behind closed doors

and lastly certain answers could have serious negative implications in current negotiations

I don't think in his case he was really spinning anything, felt like he was just opening fans eyes to situations they don't have to take into consideration

ex. a fan can say buy this player and that player without worry about any details...they can also say the board is getting richer and richer..again without any facts or details

For me, I thought he answered them well...there are so many components in running an efficient business that majority of people overlook or aren't even aware of

Re: Fans laugh as Gazides says Wenger accountable to them

i think we need to try and distinguish on how Arsenal as a company is doing, and our relationship with said company.

My opinion on Arsenal relates to my relationship as a supporter of Arsenal and it boils down to one statement and one statement only - I feel the seat prices do not reflect a decent return on the standard of football played.

But if you asked me how I thought Arsenal as a company were doing, blimey, they are a remarkable outfit. As a business, it is almost impossible to criticise them. They've built one of the best stadiums in Europe, they have people willing to visit that stadium running into the 50,000+ bracket for LEAGUE CUP matches, and they have propelled themselves into the European elite from a standing start on a paralell with Tottenham and Everton in the late 1980s. Look at the other clubs in the UK who have built new stadiums, almost all of them were relegated within a couple of years and some have never come back to the big time (Southampton, Leicester, havent come back, Boro Sunderland have also gone down). Liverpool, Spurs, Everton, all have wanted to build a new ground and have found it rather difficult. They tapped into a brand involving a manager and his apparent alchemic genius at bringing players through a youth system and swimming determinedly against the current of big money transfers - and although this has started to fail, from the business point of view it is only probably of very minor concern if any concern at all, as the fans are still turning up in droves and will in all probability continue to do so.

My relationship is therefore similar to the one I have with my energy supplier. The people who got into the private energy business after de-regulation of national Utilities in the UK are undoubtedly master businessmen, they have manouevered the British people into captive dependency on a handful of companies operating as a cartel and are setting utility prices as high as they please. If the costs of the raw energy units drop they do not pass that cost onto the customer they choose to fudge the issue with smoke mirrors or simply stonewall any querying party.

In the same way I would prefer it if Arsenal dropped seat prices or did not put them up, I would prefer my electricity bill to drop. But I can quite understand why this would not happen, and if I were a stakeholder in either business i would strongly criticise any intention to do so as madness.

So you can comment on your relationship with Arsenal as a paying customer, but I dont understand people who criticise the business, it is very robust indeed. Likewise Wenger, I have no doubt that if he spent as much money as everyone else, he would win the league every year. Hes one of the few managers on the planet to have won the premier league so that makes him a decent manager to have at the club. I personally think he has certain blindspots, but so does every of the big managers. Benitez used to sp*nk money about like it was the end of the world, Mourinho falls out with everyone. Wengers is that he neglects defense in favour of attack. But in the same way I'm not going to say the board is doing a bad job, I am not going to say Wenger is doing a bad job either, he isnt, and I couldnt do a better one.

But Im still being ripped off, by both Arsenal, and the utility companies, even though both businesses perform excellently in almost all respects.

Celine I would argue there have been times in the last few seasons when his selection and tactics have cost us.

oh yes definitely Im no real fan of the man but I still think most other managers would have us moaning unless they were given serious money to throw about.

I agree that on net spend Aw has been tremendous, but why sign a player like Squillaci and not give Bartley or Miquel chances and see if they are up to it,for that matter give WG his pay rise instead of spending it on a waste of space. It is akin to hte talk that Larsson may return, what message does that send to Lansbury et al.

Probs because Squillaci is a seasoned pro who should have been a very useful player (and was at times in all honestly) and those two are nothing players.

How many points did Squillaci cost us,and if they are nothing why have we retained their services.

Tom never say anyone 'nothing player' unless I say so..(Sm102)

Never seen Bartley yet..Miguel is a very good prospect..squi is always an accident waiting to happen..only AW pays 4.5 million or whatever fuc.k for those French poodles..

If I ware AW..instead of buying Kos and Squi would have bought a standout CB like Sabotic or Samba(I mean a better one) and put Djourou as 3rd choice with Miguel and Bartley as 4th and 5th choice. Probably would have gone for Luiz last summer...well you know AW..penny smart pound foolish or whatever you call..

Agree with rockstaar and eduardo. Celine's last post was great.
@Sandy, luis is an inexperienced toure, there's no difference he would've made to our defence. And ive not seen subotic but koscielny is far better than samba. Also, asking for bartley to be fourth choice last season (actually 3rd considering injury to vermaelen) is to ask for more reason to moan. So u just ended up telling us you wouldve made our defence worse if u were the manager.

Luiz has been terrible so far.

But saying you have never seen Bartley makes him a nothing player, and Miquel playing one game makes him a nothing player.

@ celine...good post

but exactly how is Arsenal ripping you off...realistically they have consistently competed (seriously challenged) for titles every year...they may not play the best football, but certainly top 3-4

I would agree that they are pricing out some supporters, but ripping you off is a little extreme in my book

and whats the point of asking a company man questions only to not want to hear the companies viewpoint...if someone asks why the increase..and he answers that we froze the increase for a while, but our utilities and stuff ave doubled so thats the reason

whats wrong with that answer? thats the reason...simple..either you live with it or you don't

myles palmer believes that Gazides saying Wenger is accountable to fans is a coded warning to Arsene

What was coded about that? He clearly said that things happen behind the scenes that we aren't aware of (like Wenger reprimanding players, whilst keeping a level head to the media)

He was just explaining to the supporters that don't seem to understand that the club inevitably answers to them and think that the board would just endlessly support a manager regardless of the supporters feelings towards a manager

every club its the same...if the supporters aren't behind the team..changes have to be made...simple...nothing coded about it..just plain facts

There was an article on the Mirror (yes, I know they're not always the most reliable source of info) website regarding the Q&A which states:

"Despite grumblings from supporters reaching a peak in the wake of last season's disappointments - Wenger was said to have been less than enamoured by chief executive Ivan Gazidis' suggestion that the manager is "ultimately accountable to the fans" - the Gunners boss is determined to plough his own furrow.

"Wenger has refused to be be browbeaten into changing his transfer market strategy, although he is not resistant to buying more experienced players, such as Samba, if they fit his plans."

Does Wenger think he's untouchable?

In the Q&A IG said that ultimately it's the fans that AW is accountable to because the fans have the ability, if they choose to, to make it unsustainable (I think the word he was looking for was 'untenable') for him to stay."

When Nigel Phillips then asked him how the fans make their feelings known (as they don't go to games to boo) IG said "very clearly the board monitors what it is we have to do in order to have a fan base that remains engaged, and if we're losing our fans there are all kinds of signs of that..." and went on to mention renewals.

But I think you can take from that that the board will have people keeping a close eye on forums like this and other sources of fan opinion as well as ticket sales etc.

They'll have spreadsheets & pie charts showing them everything they need to know that affects the business - they don't leave anything to chance.

Therefore, if Wenger doesn't pull his finger out, significantly improve the squad, and get the team winning again, and instead fan unrest increases & affects ticket/membership sales, sponsorships etc, then the matter will be 'taken out of his hands' so to speak.

I think the Mirror article is a perfect example of what IG was afraid of...look how easily they took a statement that is true for every football club on earth and then 'spin' it into a negative light with no proof of Wenger saying such things

Its why executives answer the way they do

very interesting Pip.
I dont beleive IG that theer is very little Churn, I know 3 fans who have chucked tickets in. I am sure everyone knows someone who has done the same.
He cant possibly know how many on the waiting list will take up offer of tickets.
Also he cant predict how many matches Silvers will attend, except he expects less because they are giving reds more allocation.
I tested selling my seat on line last season - no takers beacuse my seat isnt cheap enough, yet mine isnt most expensive seat

It depends what the board considers as churn, as opposed to 'natural wastage'. I've no idea how many season ticket holders there are but say there's 40,000. If 8000 a year giving up their tickets, and all those are sold to silver members, and everybody on the various waiting lists move up, thats a 20% turnover each year.

To me that seems quite a lot - their forward projections in their 'business model' might show that in 10 years you would have sold the season tickets twice over.

The gold & silver memberships may still be full but the red membership has now become severely depleted because the overall turnover is moving faster than the number of new members joining. This is what I would guess the board would consider as churn, and not desirable, as eventually you would run out of buyers for STs.

If instead you only had say 400 season ticket holders leaving per year, then this is only a 1% turnover which would leave silver & red members hanging on for years just to move up their respective lists a fraction. This may cause frustration among those members & again you may find those memberships starting to fall as they would see it as a waste of time. The board would consider this as the membership stagnating.

However, if you have between 2000 & 4000 season ticket holders leaving every year, this 5-10% turnover may just be enough to keep things moving along at a nice pace. You'll continue to have your mid to long term season ticket holders, a batch of new ST holders every year, those on the silver & red memberships move up enough places each year to keep them interested. This would be the desirable scenario for the board.

So although to you & me 4000 ST holders leaving each year may sound a lot on the face of it, the board may consider this a healthy natural wastage that you get with any large company. IG did say that people holding on to their STs was not healthy - if every ST holder renewed every year, the silver & red members would effectively be blocked off from moving up.

IG also said that the biggest crime is to see an empty seat, so I think we'll see them putting a lot more effort into getting the Ticket Exchange more noticed to get as many of seats belonging to ST holders who can't make it to a game sold.

It would be really interesting to see how many have not renewed this year compared to previous years to get an idea of the sort of membership turnover, but I would think this is commercially very sensitve information.

being a silver member does not put you on ST list.
you may be right about churn, but dont forget empty seats at stadium increasing.
mind you at 6K a year thats 30,000 peope evry 5 years.
are there 30,000 ready to replace them as wages drop?
