A team united, a manager listened. The 97/98 title race
By Merlion
January 7 2025
The team was shaken by the fans’ reaction to the Blackburn Rovers defeat. On the following Monday morning, the team decided to call a meeting at Sopwell House to clear the air and the way forward. Fingers were pointed, blame and harsh home truths expressed. The key issue was aired by the Fab-4 – lack of protection from Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit.
Arsenal next game was against Wimbledon on 22 December. Arsenal was playing badly and the game was scoreless when the floodlights failed early in the second half. The game was postponed and rescheduled. It turned out that it was a scam run by Far East betting syndicates. It was a blessing in disguise for Arsenal. The postponed game was the springboard for Arsenal to return to form.
Two days later, Arsenal held their team Christmas night out at the London Café de Paris. Tony Adams reiterated the grievances aired at Sopwell House showdown, this time going directly to Arsene Wenger at the lack of protection from midfield owed to the backline. Arsene Wenger was very approachable, very sympathetic to his players’ point of view, listened and took all opinions into consideration.
Arsenal’s fight back to save their season began on Boxing Day by beating Leicester City, and drew with Tiny Totts to closed out 1997. Arsenal began 1998 still in 6th place and 12 points (albeit with a game in hand) behind Manchester United.
In February, ManU was still 12 points clear at the top of the Table. Fred Done, a ManU-supporting bookmaker paid out on bets that ManU will win a 5th EPL title in 6 years by season’s end.
Arsenal went on an 18-game unbeaten run, beating Everton 4-0 to win the title at the 36th game. Arsenal kept 12 clean sheets out of last 14 games run to 36th game. Alex Manninger set a new EPL record by keeping 6 successive league game clean sheets. Arsenal lost the last 2 games to prepare for the FA Cup Final.
Currently, we are 6 points behind Liverpool (and win a game in hand), in a much better position than the 1997/98 team. After the morale boosting wins against Monaco and Crystal Palace, we are posed for a run in 2025, an unbeaten run well within our capability. The fate lies in hands o Mikel Arteta to work out a solution in the absence of Saka. The consolation is that Jesus and Martinelli had found their shooting boots and are playing with new found confidence.
Our Defence is solid with the Twin Tower and with Timber and Calafiori as wingback. The key is a healthy squad by February such that Arteta can rotate players and with viable options to select players to suit opposition. The worry is that we have only one reliable goalie in David Raya and we do not have a “Alex Manniger” to step in. The key is that the squad remains healthy till Tomi and White are ready to play in February.
The Midfield depends very much on Odegaard to up his performances to another level and with much creativity. Currently, he is not playing to his potential and lacks that vision to execute through balls and lack mobility to play “give and go” like Salah with one-two and drive into the box as a goal scoring threat. The blame lies with Arteta who have yet to come out with a solution to counter low block effective with Odegaard’s ability to hold the ball and to execute accurate through balls. Instead, in desperation during 2nd half when it is scoreless, Odegaard and rest of midfield started to lob balls into the box without 2 or 3 Arsenal players there challenging for the lobs. This reflects the failure of the team to develop communication and understanding each other preferences and movements into the box. And it also results in Saka being individualistic and trying too hard to dribble through the low block when passing options are non-existence. It is the sheer brilliance of Saka carrying the team so far. Without Saka, it will be Odegaard and Rice who will carry the playmaking job now. Not forgetting that Merino is still not up to speed yet and he will certainly find his footing by February the more minutes he played.
Goal scoring prowess by Forward-Line must improve. It is Arteta who now has to devise the tactical formation to bring the best out of a rejuvenated and confident Jesus, a Martinelli who is playing with more confidence and a Havertz who is able to drift into more goal-scoring spaces created by the movements of Jesus and Martinelli. Havertz had been spending more time in midfield to hunt for the balls and he is not a natural no. 9 who is always available to receive the ball. No. 9 is Jesus’ job. What Havertz does best is as a deep-lying striker coming in deep into spaces after Jesus and Martinelli had pulled the Defence into disarray with their movements and pace. As an example, before Myappe, both Vinicus Jr and Rodryk are highly mobile, cutting inwards and moving outwards, creating openings for Bellingham to drive into the centre. Deep thinking required for Arteta to rethink and refine his tactical formation for an attacking team without Saka now.
As long as we are still within touching distance of Liverpool and Chelski by end-February, and with Saka predicted to return in March, there is every possibility we can win he 2024/25 title as long as there is no more April/May Collapse. If the 1997/98 team was 12 points (with a game in hand) behind ManU in February, why can’t we go on an Unbeaten Run, with at least 15 wins, in 2025 to win the title?

Everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong this season. It feels like every marginal call has gone against us. Penalties, red cards, injuries, illness, I could go on.
Bemoaning the bad luck is one thing but the club didn't do enough in the summer. After the Bayern game last year Arteta said, and I'm paraphrasing, that we needed to add players to the attack. We didn't look like scoring that day and that happens too frequently.
Arteta is also wedded to the idea that the number 8 needs to be physical and crash the box, Havertz, Merino, Rice and to a lesser extent, Xhaka. With Rice at the 6 surely the number 8 to go for should've been a different profile to Merino, a player with guile who could unlock a defence. More of an Eze type player. With our elite defenders we can afford to get another attacker on the pirch.
Anyway, we are where we are. The defence is still good while the attack continues to splutter.
I don't see us going on a run like we did last season. Especially without our top man.....yes, we should sign a Sterling, Trossard or Martinelli replacement in January and look to move them all on in the summer, not that anyone will want them.
Let's win a cup, finish top 4 and regroup- ready to go again

We look defensively solid because the manager prioritizes defensive structure, even if we lose attacking flair.
Saiba has given away 3-4 goals already this season and he is supposed the best of the lot.
The moment we play a bit more open, the opposition teams score enough with even what seem one of chances like what brentford did because our defenders come second best against tricky players one v one unless they have protection from a team mate

The organisation is up in the air at times.
Not sure Timber and Califori help the C/Backs at times.

Not only that, Arsenal had a very vocal and assertive TA4 which gave Wenger some home truths and he listened and adjusted the team.
Today?
An egoistic dumbfcuk where only his opinions matter and a non-existent captain who rolled over for him, following his instruction slavishly on the pitch like a preprogrammed robot. No initiative to create plays out of Arteta Playbook.
And when the chips are down and we needed them badly to lead, the Twin Tower collapsed like sandcastle in a light breeze without a whimper.
This is the stat of the team in the new year 2025.

Why Wenger won the 1997/98 title was that he inherited a solid Fab-4 and Seaman who provided the team with a solid foundation to go on a winning run - I think they clocked 12 clean sheets in 14 games then.

Why?
I think the reason is that inverting FB does not worked anymore and all EPL managers are wised to these tactics and had since found counters to tear Arsenal Defence apart.
The glaring vulnerability they detected is the tendency of our Defence to sit back and retreating when players are driving with the ball towards the box. This resulted in many attackers with clear shoots from outside the box.
There is no press from midfielders or double team attackers driving into the box with Arsenal Defence contented to just keep them out of the box.
Just watched how times both Gabriel and Saliba retreated where an attacker found the space and time to shoot quickly at goal or slip a pass to his teammate running in from the blindside.
It is a disunited Back-4 now with plenty of gaps between defenders for quick attackers to get behind and between them with our Midfield non-existent to offer a shield for Back-4.
Brighton and Newcastle knew it and why they dominated our midfield so easily ... by simply bypassed them when they are highup on the pitch, using a quick long pass over them, and running at our Back-4 down their throats.
Just look at high Brighton and Newcastle found so much space and time to score their goals.
In summary, Arteta has a disunited team that all three components - Back-4, Midfield, Forward-3 - do not synchronize nor has any decent communication, always caught high up and inverting FB always caught high up and really offering no attacking impetus or help to dominate midfield.
What is the point of having inverting FB where both FB failed in this primary function - to dominate midfield and allow attacking midfielders to create chances and to linkup with Forward-3 in attacks.
Inverting FB is a liability now.
As we are with fullbacks playing now Saliba and Gabriel are all-over.

After 19 games, we had achieved the first 3 wins in succession, and are unbeaten 10 games in a row.
We had used up 1 out of 3 draws allowed for 2nd Half.
A curious fact.
Arteta lost the 20th game for the previous 3 seasons, 2021/22 to 2023/24.
Plus, Arsene Wenger drew the 20th game 1-1 during 1997/98 and 2003/04 seasons.

Nothing like injustice and a sense of unfairness that so united a team with a chip on their shoulders called prosecution complex.
It is like battling against the opponent or a biased referee looking at every opportunity to do them in.
Let's hope that Wolves Game is a turning point, an inflexion point, that the team fiercely believe in themselves to get the job done, and able to hunt down Liverpool, and on Feb 2, they will be all out for blood against Man City on the injustice of that day, when down to 10 men, only for Stones to equalize on the 98th minute with virtually the last kick of the game.
That Haaland, and Gabriel replied, "See you at Emirates".
Three games that the team must stay united and played out of their skins to win, all game-changing our season, without an inferiority complex and a deep believe that they will thrive in the face of adversity:
#1 - Beat Girona to secure Top-2 or Top-3 position.
#2 - Beat Man City to close the gap.
#3 - Beat Newcastle to enter an EFL Cup Final after more than a decade.
I am confident that out of the Fiery Furnace of Injustice and Adversity, Arteta got his carbon content right and well-balanced, and a finely forged tempered steel, that is flexible without breaking, of a team will emerge.
Let's hope it is not "too much carbon" and ended up with brittle pig iron.

There is no valid reason why we canโt win our next 11 league games, including ManU and Chelski, until we meet Liverpool on 15 May 2025, Round #36.
We had navigated our biggest hurdle that will stop our consecutive win sequence.
