Barnsley 0 – 1 Hull

Worrying for the reds this game showed why they will be in a relegation battle this season and although I desperately hope I’m wrong, I think that we will go down.
We were the better side, no doubting that. We had all the possession and all the shots but we seemed destined not to score and to get anything from this game we would have to keep a clean sheet, something we haven’t been very good at recently.
We conceded from a corner, we’ve always been bad at defending corners. Had Jackson stayed on for the corner we would have still conceded in my opinion and then the vultures would be out saying why have we left an injured player on to defend a corner instead of why make a substitution when defending a corner.
For all the shots we had, I think the Hull keeper only had two shots to save. One from Hedges that any keeper would have saved and the one from Bradshaw six yards out when the keeper did well but Bradshaw was poor to not lift it over him as he had committed to the ground.
If indeed I am right and we do go down then the manager should not be sacked. We are massively punching above our weight. The fact that we are close in games and the only real hammerings we’ve had have been against Villa and Bristol City is a miracle in itself.
When your team is losing games you will always get fans saying the manager should be picking him or we should be playing this formation. All of us won’t agree with every selection the manger makes and I’ll tell you what, we won’t when we see the team sheet before games that we win as well.
Ultimately for me it doesn’t come down to team selection or formation, whichever way the manager chooses to go we have an almighty battle on our hands for every second of every game to get anything at all from any team in this division.
A lot these players will become good Championship players but to expect them to all hit the ground running and keep us in this league is a big ask and not many would be able to do it, most wouldn’t get the blood, sweat and guts that our manager gets out of these lads.
It is not like the team that came up who had all played together and had the momentum and belief. These lads have all been plucked from different teams and thrown together to play at a higher level than they have played before and let’s face it, they just aren’t as good as the players we had last season.
On paper we should be in the bottom three with a lot less points than we have now so anything above that is a remarkable achievement.
If we did go down then we would probably keep most of this squad together and if the takeover went through then we would also have the money to mount a serious comeback and be able to pay our players Championship wages to keep them at the club.
