Manchester City 5 Burnley 0

By Burnley FC
October 20 2018

A 100th meeting between the two clubs couldn’t bring a landmark victory for the Clarets as Manchester City extended their perfect home record to return to the top of the Premier League.

Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez and Leroy Sane got the goals to bring an end to Burnley’s three-match unbeaten run.

But there was controversy about the goal scored by Silva nine minutes into the second half which took the game away from the Clarets and sent the champions on their way to a fifth successive home league win.

Sean Dyche’s men had enjoyed their best spell just before the break and trailed only 1-0 thanks in no small part to the excellence of goalkeeper Joe Hart on his return to the Etihad Stadium.

But their resistance was all but ended when referee Jon Moss – having caused confusion over a penalty appeal – allowed Silva’s goal to stand after the ball had gone out of play before the decisive cross.

City duly cashed in as Fernandino quickly added a third, Mahrez curled in the fourth and Sane added a late fifth as Pep Guardiola's side cruised home to take their tally of goals to 18 in five home league games.

But the Clarets will feel events transpired against them on a tough afternoon which also saw City rack up a fifth successive clean sheet to underline their position at the head of English football.

On the plus side, the Clarets were able to include Steven Defour for his first taste of Premier League action since January.

Strangely thought it was a better performance than some recent ones despite the scoreline.

Amateur hour for the second and crucial goal though - play to the whistle!

We have done this before so quite obviously it was not lesson learned and by SD's comments neither will it be this time around.
Our defence seemed resigned rather than resolute.

So Cal we played well at 3-0 down... I was incensed because the second goal should not have counted. A. The ref should have blown when he dived and b. the ball was out. After that game over. Great to see Steven Defour back and he grew as the game went on. Time to give Tom H a chance between the sticks now..

Yep 24 hours later still angry at this joke scoreline and defeat.
Kompany goes off with a red and the game is wide open instead of a foregone conclusion. The second goal is an object lesson in how many mistakes can a referee make in 30 seconds.

Guardiola crowing over how beautiful was the football and the goals just makes me nauseous... The MEN said it was a masterclass... yeh in getting all the help going from an inept referee and dozy linesman.

I haven’t seen the highlights yet, but it sounds like the video ref would have made a difference.

Just watched the highlights, unlike SD I’m not convinced Kompany should have seen red, the second goal, wtf were Burnley thinking about, play to the whistle and that includes the linesman, looked as though the ball had went out. 3rd, cool strike, 4th a cracker, 5th simple. Didn’t see anything of Burnley in the opposition half.
