If you are going to play the worst ever games of your career then you may just as well play them in style. Paulo Ferreira and Ross Turnbull had horrors, shockers. Ferreira, the worst since he played in midfield in the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool and Turnbull just the worst, simply the worst.
Turnbull just doesn't inspire confidence and when I found out that he was playing, I just shuddered. My shuddering's were confirmed with Turnbull's horrific display as a much changed side crashed out of the Carling Cup.
Even the normal super-cool and captain, leader of men, John Terry, had a jittery night. At fault for United's first when he failed to clear a cross, JT got caught in possession on a couple of occasions which could have seen the scoreline more damaging than if finished.
Chelsea got off to a flyer when Patrick van Aanholt steered in a low Kakuta cross, then Newcastle came more into the game and a threatened equaliser came when Ranger slid home from close range.
United took the lead when Bruma was booked for a foul on Ameobi, Ryan Taylor, who should have been sent off earlier for a cyncial scythe on Kakuta, fired Newcastle into the lead.
United went further ahead at the start of the second-half when Ameobi shot weakly past Turnbull after a Ferreira error.
With thirty minutes left, Kalou a second-half sub crashed to the ground after pulling-up, Josh McEachran came and simply became the best player on the pitch.
No-stop running, spraying the ball all over the place, McEachran was the star of a Chelsea champions horror show.
Chelsea's problems increased when Benayoun limped off leaving Chelsea with ten men.
Then Anelka pulled a goal back, before equalising with a cheeky-taken penalty, and with extra-time looming Ameobi at the other end, gave United victory with a header from a corner.
A disappointing and frustrating night for all concerned in Blue, but 17yr old Josh McEachran can wake up this morning and hold his head up high, high and higher.

Very impressed with Josh and and Kakuta´s first half before he got quite spectacularly taken out - hope he´s not too bad.
Turnball, as you say, had a nightmare....as he was lining up the wall we could all see in the MHU that his angles were wrong and just where they were going to put it - and sure enough - goal!
Anelka was very good I thought....Bruma made one glaring cock-up but made up for it with a superb saving tackle.
I thought we actually played better with 10 men.
Guiterrez was tireless (always plays well - I wonder if the Geordies know what a great player they´ve got on their hands?) and their young no.31 impressed me.
They played a reasonably strong side and Barnett´s pre-match cringy comments emphasising our players ages made me think that there wasn´t much of a phone-call between Houghton and Carlo....
Oh well....
