Reaction to Mustapha Carayol's 2010/11

Mustapha Carayol was as midfielder who I was excited about when we signed him. He had played brilliantly against the Imps towards the end of the 2009/10 season for Torquay, but Torquay's warnings about him being inconsisteny turned out to be the case as he became this year's Dany N'Guessan.

When we signed Carayol I was highly excited. He had been brilliant in Torquay's game against us towards the end of the 2009/10 season, but much like Dany N'Guessan, he turned out to be largely inconsistent and rarely actually having a good game. Towards the end of the season he always turned very injury prone.
When City started the season he was excellent, not afraid to run at defenders and he would often beat them, occasionally scoring, but as the season went on his ability to beat defenders completely vanished and you'd be hard pushed to see him making a penetrating run. The last assist I can specifically remember him making is against Oxford at home, and that was for an own goal and the pass itself was atrocious, just an aimless ball along the floor into the box that went absolutely no-where near any Lincoln players.
On his day he could be very good, however, his good games are few and far between and like Dany N'Guessan, he has done very little to actually deserve the reputation he seemingly has as a good attacking winger.
When the retained list was announced, it was revealed he has been made available for transfer, but I think he'll struggle for a Football League team, mainly for the reason that he has played in two different teams fighting relegation over the past two seasons.

If he leaves, he'll definitely go to a FL team because he's a good young player with a lot of potential, and despite your mindset that creative, flair players have to be brilliant all or most of the time at League 1/2 level, developing young talent is really what those leagues are about and you can't expect consistency from players of Carayol's ilk. Shame it looks like he won't be staying to develop with us because I think he'd be a real asset in the Conference.
