Coventry v NUFC Match Preview/Thread

Newcastle United travel to Coventry's Ricoh Arena, tonight for the 2nd round of the Carling Cup. Manager Kevin Keegan travels with a confident but limited side after a succession of injuries has seen his first team dwindle.

Obafemi Martins limped off with a hamstring problem against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday and looks set to miss tonight's game, whilst Michael Owen who replaced him is also not fully fit after spending the majority of pre-season watching from the sidelines.

Replacement striker Alan Smith is also a doubt but was placed on the bench for emergencies at the weekend and is likely to do so again tonight. Damian Duff left the pitch against Bolton with a knee injury and is unlikely to play, while striker Mark Viduka is yet to recover from an Achilles injury. As a result Shola Ameobi may start after failing to move away from the club so far in the summer transfer window. Keegan is also without Andy Carroll, Joey Barton and Claudio Cacapa.

Coventry also have injury problems with striker Freddy Eastward coming off against Bristol City suffering from a groin injury and keeper Kieren Westward still recovering from concussion and a dislocated finger after a collision at the weekend in their 3-0 defeat.

Defender Stephen Wright may also be a doubt for Chris Coleman's side after incurring an Achilles problem 10 days ago against Barnsley.

Keegan is confident his team will do well against the club they have met, and beaten 4 times in the FA Cup but never been drawn against in a League Cup competition. Coventry last beat Newcastle in a 4-1 win back in 1999 when Robbie Keane was on the score-sheet.

Keegan said:

"I wish I had a stronger squad to take down there, and I wish I could just rest one or two players who need a rest, but I won't be able to do that.

I've just got to pick the very best team I can. We haven't got the riches yet because of injuries.

They've got to go there, and to the Emirates four days later. It's a tough opening for us, but so far they've proved that they can stand up and take it.

They looked very fit, and were going well at the end again (against Bolton).

Our fitness is good, and our attitude is great. Our football could have been better (against Bolton), but maybe we'll do better at Coventry."

Yeah, six subs is what every source is saying. I guess Smith turned up too injured to figure at the last minute.

Anybody watching on TV? How's Bassong looked?

Nile Ranger...hell of a name!

lol Tunyc I'm just a fan of Deco's footballing ability, nothing more.

As for the game, we really playing well, creating chances and are fairly solid defensively. Beye just made a super challenge. Gutierrez, Milner and N'Zogbia are all having excellent games thus far. Still long to go though, alot can change.

Should be 3-0 from what I read...everyone agrees the foul on Zog was a pen.

No worries, Wasim-just a bit of the craic. Besides, if you're going to have a man-crush on someone, it might as well be Deco!

I was about to say this has been our best half in a long while, and then...2-1 Morrison with a cracker. We've controlled the game should be 3-0 up like you say Tunyc. Half time now, but good first half overall.

Coventry don't deserve to be 2-1 down, we've dominated and have been toying with them. Beye should have cleared their goal and they got extremely lucky that the block fell straight to Morrison. I expect some more goals from us.

Its still 2-1 after 62 minutes, we seem comfortable, but fingers crossed I'm not speaking too soon. We are said to be a very fit side, so perhaps if needs be we can lift the gear later on.

To answer a question above, Bassong has looked solid, strong in the tackle, and not the slowest around either. Looks a good centre back in the making.

With a full complement of strikers, this game is over at full time. From what I read we've created enough for four or five goals.

We've done it, having made it difficult for ourselves, but we've done what was needed. 45 minutes from Owen is one of many positives from today. Milner would be my man of the match! Guthrie and N'Zogbia weren't far behind.

WHEW!
(Sm43)thumbs down
The squad is clearly inadequate-this game exposed it completely. With actual strikers on the pitch we don't need extra time, and we need more than one sub on the bench in whom KK has confidence going forward, simple as. Sounds like the defense really degenerated late in the game, which is very worrying. Hope we have some more good news in the next week.

we played well, and would have lost that game inside 90 min last year. cov were running through walls, but we stood up to them.
breifly, colo was class, first to everything, and he used the ball very well. bassong encouraging, enrique showed what he can do but had the odd lapse. guthrie again excellent, milner even better. jonas again did well in defence and attack.

we could have had ten, but like dub says we were hit with two sucker punches. importantly, we reacted positively to both setbacks. i'm taking the positives, cos i've seen us wilt in games like this far too many times

Well done lads.

If only we'd had Owen or Martins on the pitch fro the start we would have put this game to bed early. We still need another striker ... ASHLEY SPEND THE CASH... as the squad is too small.

Beye doesnt look quite match fit (so will forgive him)Colo and Bassong looked decent enough and Enrique has got to play at LB against Arsenal, Nzog so much better further up the pitch.

In the past we would have lost this but anyway a win is a win and on the next round. (Sm152)
