Match Thread/Stats/Preview:Blackburn Rovers v NUFC

By Tyne-Talk
January 17 2009

Newcastle United travel to Blackburn Rovers Ewood Park for today's 3pm Kick Off. They travel on the back of a poor run of games, losing midweek to Hull City in the FA Cup and only winning 1 game in their last 6. Blackburn have won just 2 of their last 6 games, both teams having drawn 2 matches a piece.

The stats have very little reflection on their league positions; the 5 points which separate the two sides have created the difference between 11th and 20th.  Blackburn sit at 19th in the table's relegation zone whilst Newcastle are hovering outside the top 10 at 11th but also outside the bottom 3 with just 3 points separating them from the drop zone, having played 1 game more than 3 of the teams below them.

Former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce who has today announced that the club failed to understand the thinking behind his intentions at the club, will be hoping his current side will show his former employers exactly what they are missing.

Blackburn have won their last 4 meetings against Newcastle and Newcastle have only won once in their last 13 away games.

Kinnear, who placed Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll on the bench in midweek despite them both carrying injuries, has no good news for the fans as none of his injured players will be returning to the squad.

That rules out, Joey Barton, Cacapa, Beye, (all knee), Geremi (back), Enrique (hamstring), Viduka (groin), Martins (Hernia op), Smith (foot/ankle), Ameobi (ankle) and Gonzalez (Achilles).

For today's game Owen will start upfront, probably with Carroll, though Xisco is also available, whilst Steven Taylor is a concern, if fit he will resume his role in the starting eleven to notch up his 100th appearance in the league.

The extensive injury list leaves the door open for Nile Ranger and Ryan Donaldson to make the substitutes bench, despite playing for the youth side on Thursday.

Allardyce is without any new injury concerns and is likely to debut new loan signing Gael Givet.  David Dunn is set to return to action after a hamstring problem and Santa Cruz is also back in contention after recovering from a calf injury.

Pete Graves, Centurys broadcaster at the match, has just said that the team is going to contain some bi suprises. He thinks this means kids starting or possibly Barton and Enrique starting.

Omar - we have pulled back from 2-0 before and apparently we are the better team from the KO 1st Half.

Additionally noone can beleive how Blackburn are winning when they are playing so poorly in comparison.

This is either luck or we have issues (which we know about anyway)

It may have been a soft penalty but Edgar didn't help by jumping in, arms and legs going in all direction, the pratt.

Didn't your heart just sink when you saw who was refereeing this match.

Rob Stiles does it again.. We were completely dominant until the penalty.. Awful decision changes the game.. Rob Stiles I hate you so much, your the worst PL referee, which is really saying something. Completely standard game for Stiles, a billion yellows, a red, after Butt received his first yellow for nothing, a penalty that wasn't, and a bunch of other pathetic decisions given by the biggest pompous @#$%& to ever referee a football match..
I love how Stiles shows Butt his second yellow then says something to him and looks smug then slyly shows the red, what is Stiles trying to convey? It seemed personal to me, I really wouldn't put it past him, he's so ego driven (worst possible trait for an official, of any description) that it's possible he sent Butt off because he doesn't like him, or likes the attention, which we all know he does..

diagf..

Also, I wish McCarthy wouldn't have a cry every time he's given offside (when he's clearly off by 2 or 3 yards).. Obviously only does it to try and sway the linesmans judement in the future when he has a real decision to make..

/rant.

I hope the lads can bounce back from this.. Heads went down after the penalty. If we can string some results together over the next month or so we could end up finishing around 8th (best case scenerio) which would be a great result, considering the start we had to this season..

All the best boys and girls..

so from this season, if we were to buy ryan taylor and pay styles to never ref again, we'd have at least 7 more points from making one transfer.

taylor gets wigan a pt in the first and 3 in the second. styles takes 2 away from us at city and we should have at least been able to draw today without him there, maybe win it.

Re: Match Thread/Preview: Blackburn Rovers v NUFC
Posted by: lostmekeys (IP Logged)

never a pen, and butt was very unlucky to get two cards. we have been lucky with other results though, both stoke and sunderland were winning and both eventually lost. the table looks awful for us though, and it'll take more than other teams results to paper over the situation if we dont pick up some points soon.

as someone said above, butt missing a match does at least give us a look at barton and guthrie in the city game, when an attacking mindset will possibly be our best chance. like when going away to portsmouth, sitting back against city would be suicide, they have a much better attack than they do defence

I agree about guthrie and Barton, but the "mustnt lose" mindset will start to set in, which in itself causes games to be lost.

Welcome to relegation dogfight hell.
