Harper Calls On Fans To Raise The Roof At St James' Park

After 16 years at the club, goalkeeper Steve Harper will be dreading slipping down a league into the Championship. Newcastle are currently 4 points from safety with 5 games to go, a win on Monday would put them in a good chance of grabbing a place just outside the bottom 3. Newcastle host Portsmouth on Monday night & Harper is encouraging the fans to get behind the players & cheer them to success.
The club will be issuing 50,000 black and white cards, 20,000 flags and 1000 scarf's before kick off to encourage a buoyant atmosphere; but they will mean very little without the "roar" of the crowd.
Harper told the official site nufc.co.uk;
"We'll need a full house with everybody behind us roaring us on. We need the fans more than ever during these three home games.
They can be our 12th man. We need 52,000 Geordies screaming us on because the situation is a difficult one.
I would quite happily take an 8-7 win! We just need three points. The gap is four points at the moment and that's too many.
We've got to narrow that gap. We keep saying if we get that win the teams above us will be looking over their shoulders but we've got to do ourselves a favour starting on Monday night.
It's a must, must-win. We've got three massive home games and we're going to need every ounce of support."
Newcastle have just 5 games to play until the end of the 2008/2009 campaign, Portsmouth on Monday, their trip to Anfield the following week and then the home game against Middlesbrough are all televised matches. Following these games we have Fulham at home, followed by Aston Villa away on the last day of the season.
