Rafa Dismisses Owen Talk

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has ruled out a summer move for Michael Owen. Owen who is yet to sign a new contract for Newcastle is not on Rafa's wish list. The 29 year old former Liverpool player hasn't hinted at where he will be playing next season, but the underlying feeling is that his refusal to sign for Newcastle means it will be elsewhere.
Unfortunately for Owen, this season hasn't been one for the CV. Despite being Newcastle's leading goal-scorer he has scored just 8 goals and is struggling to have an impact on big games.
Rafa told The Sunday Star;
"I think it's a different situation to the Robbie Fowler one. Robbie knew it was a fantastic opportunity for him to come back.
He had been injured and had not played games in a row. And we were looking for a striker of his quality. We were looking for this kind of player.
He understood clearly what his role was. Michael is younger and still has a lot of years to play, so it is a different situation.
Clearly he's a top class striker so he will want to play every game. But at this moment we are really pleased with Fernando Torres."

Torres/ Owen. Tough choice. When will they stop with the whole Owen/ liverpool crack. He jumped ship abroad without thinking of them so why would they want him back.

The rumor linking him to Everton is a lot more believable...doesn't make a damn difference to me at this point...

I would have him stay on the basis he upped his game but 8 goals a season (albeit not a complete season due to injury) doesnt bode well for proving another years wages would be justified.
So currently I dont think his wages next season will be worth their money.

Im not sure Everton could afford to pay his wages even if he is on a free. A lot of people will be looking at Owen as a big risk and if the likes of Everton or Villa signed him it could blow their wage structures wide open.
None of the top four will have him either. Unless Man City come in for him I can see him having to half his wages (Poor bairn). Who knows, he might end up staying at the toon on a much reduced contract.

if he wants 110k or whatever he gets now, no way. so how much? he could get a basic of around half that, with big bonuses for appearances and goals, which i think would be payments for reaching 5, then 10, then 15 goals, rather than for each goal, then a bonus at the end of the season based on his number of appearances to a scale set up beforehand. the thing with this kind of deal is, whilst it can be great to motivate a player, clubs often soften the blow by giving large signing on deals, and why would we give him one, when he's here already? also, i think any meaningful cut in his wages would appear to be a climbdown by owen, so i cant see him signing such a deal with us when a similar deal is on the table at another club in the premier league. this all adds up, for me, to him leaving, and i am happy enough with that.

posted at the same time biff, i think there is a limit when we ask him to accept a reduction, and when it gets down to he's actually worth, it would be so low that his pride would stop him signing with us, and he would take a low offer elsewhere instead, to save face
