Match Preview/Thread/Stats: Newcastle v Middlesbrough
By Tyne-Talk
May 10 2009
Newcastle host Middlesbrough tomorrow night as both teams battle the prospect of relegation. Being all square on points Newcastle are only ahead of Middlesbrough on goal difference and both teams are level on points with bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion. Newcastle have drawn just one game in their last six, whilst Middlesbrough have won one and drawn one, losing four of their last six.
Newcastle have failed to win in their last 10 league games but a win for Alan Shearer's side tomorrow would move them just outside the bottom three, whilst Middlesbrough travel in the knowledge that a defeat would be a club record of eleven successive league defeats away from home.
Shearer has several players unavailable tomorrow, including Joey Barton who was red carded against Liverpool and then suspended by Shearer. Jose Enrique continues to struggle with a hamstring injury and Alan Smith who has just returned from injury only has a 50% chance of playing after picking up a thigh problem last weekend.
Steven Taylor has resumed training this week after recovering from an ankle injury and could feature whilst Obafemi Martins will play a part despite requiring groin surgery at the end of the season.
Alan Shearer is likely to recall Michael Owen to the starting line-up and opt for a three man attack alongside Mark Viduka and Martins.
Gareth Southgate will be without Emanuel Pogatetz who has a knee injury and Chris Riggott who has an ankle problem, but he will welcome back Andrew Taylor who has recovered from a hip injury.

My personal belief is we need Gutierrez and lovenkrands on both wings. They can run at defenders and can create chances. Nicky Butt should also play. In Attack Owen, Viduka, Martins, and in defence, Bassong, Steven Taylor, Ryan taylor, and dare i say (coloccini: i really feel he has bee a weak point in our defense). At the 60th minute substitute Viduka for Carroll and Owen/Martin for a midfielder preferrably Guthrie (hopefully we have had several goals by then
433 with 2 wingers we would be destroyed in the middle of the park

4-4-2, 2-1 to us.
It's my day off today, what a long day it's been waiting anxiously for the match.
C'mon the Toon.

That's because of another apparent injury setback, with Obafemi Martins understood to have made himself unavailable for selection due to ongoing groin problems.

im sick of hearing butt has been our best player
yeah, too right! if we had played donniger instead of butt there is no way we'd be sweating over the points needed to stay up with three games to go.
mainly because we'd already be down, but at least there would be no tension tonight

Newcastle:

No one in here said Butt is our best player. Christ, he makes too many mistakes with the ball. He cannot even pass the ball in a direct manner. Very painful to watch. I see the explanation that annie and senyabtoon have laid forward and i get it. Since they are coming to win they have to play us. But we need the win too. Now imagine we still had Milner and Nzogbia. Men we would have options. But all the same 442 with 2 wingers lovenkrands and Gutierrez, Guthrie and Butt. The game is too risky to bring Donninger in in my opinion. We go with experience
the pundits always say it
and the toon in training pics this week said he been our most consitent(boring all the time) player

Quote:i think if i was at the match id be tryin to get these sort of songs(daragh copyright) shud be sang instead of the shearer chants its the players who need motivation ri nowDaraghL

That's not a good thing, but I'll take it.
Nolan and Butt are letting too many through balls go unchallenged until the back four.

oba on?
boro are getting used to us, if they score now we're done

call it 2 1 full time
COMMMON!

SIGNED HIM ON A FREE FROM GERMANY!

Not bad for goal difference, eh?
Did Kinnear ever have a substitute come on and score the equializer or a winner? Carroll off the bench for the equalizer at Stoke, Martins and Lovenkrandts for the winner and security goals against Borro.
Well deserved 3 points. Majority of possession, almost 70% pass success, 4 offside traps and 3 beautiful goals. 2 thanks to Martins going all out.
i thought we were a lot better than we have been for weeks

Boro weren;t good but we weren't bad, however we did nearly lose it started to fall apart before pulling it back together again.
2 or 3 more points and its prem footy next year come on the lads!!! Guthrie and big mark were fantastic all night even Nolan chipped in with an assist !!!!
We played better than I've seen in a while, though we were lucky at times thanks to playing a poor Boro side.
Now lets carry this on to the weekend and get some kind of a result against Fulham.

Agree with Viduka as MOM. Slagged off on alot, perhaps deserving some, but when he's on and playing we are a much better attacking side. Makes up for our lack of controling/attacking midfield in many ways.
Surviving is back in our hands. Still want Hull to lose out, but if we take care of business, Shearer can begin taking care of us for next season!
HOWAY!
Not to mention, if we go into the Villa game 3 points ahead of Hull, we can play the young guns (Donniger, Carroll, Ranger, Vukcic) without worry.

He can fu<k off back to his Cheshire mansion and feed his horses whilst waiting for his wife to come out and say "Michael........theres a Mr Capello on the phone for you"
(But Dont hold your breath Mickey, Walcott has your place I think)
I'd much rather have a lad like Andy Carroll.
Owens best days are behind him

Harper was shocking in the first half but pulled off a cracking save later on.
Taylor, butt and Jonas put a good shift in.
Guthrie made us tick a bit more than usual.
Viduka was immense and made such a difference up front. If he only had a better injury record.
Would like to see Jonas and Loven start together with Guth in the middle for Nolan.

Probably enjoyed the last 30 seconds!
