Hughton Named As Manager

Chris Hughton's appointment as manager has been accepted by his colleagues as a good move. Derek Llambias managing director confirmed the contract for 18 months has been signed and that Chris is now officially in post.
He gave the following statement;
"We are delighted that Chris has accepted the post of full time manager. He has done a terrific job this season and we wish him every success for the rest of this season and beyond. He will continue to receive our full backing and support."
Chris Hughton also gave a statement on the back of the club's announcement, he said;
"It is a very proud day for me to be named as the manager of this magnificent football club. I thank Mike and Derek for their support and will be doing everything in my power to get the Club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Having the unequivocal backing of the players has helped me enormously and I would also like to thank Colin Calderwood, Paul Barron and the rest of the backroom staff who have never been anything but tremendously supportive to me this season."
He will continue to be supported by Colin Calderwood who rejected the manager position at Tranmere Rovers yesterday in favour of remaining on Tyneside.

Ive never been that keen on the position of director of football however i feel with Hughton taking the job its only a matter of time before this position appears once again at NUFC and as long as they appoint the right person then it will be a good thing.
there is no denying that Hughton is a very capable coach but has he any experience in buying players and identifying targets, colin calderwood has done it at a lower level but im not sure if they will be successful in the transfer market especially when we are going to have a limited budget.

The one things this will bring is stability and I think you can`t realy argue with the results and you could also say the performances. There has been a few horries but a lot of the goals leaked lately have been defensive errors and these appear to be costing us.
A Major concern for me is the dealing of transfers as Im not sure how this is going to work or even if Hughton will be involved. If he is has he got the connections or experience to bring quality players in ?

our recent results and performances have been poor, but compare the players available for early games (when we played well) with those playing in the last month, and a lot of the difference in performance is immediately explained.
hughton gets at 7 or 7.5 out of 10 for the season so far, would have been more if he'd done something spectacular once injuries hit, but then again maybe thats asking a lot.
we're still in it, we have players close to fitness, so judging chris hughton is maybe best done fairly further down the line. what we all know is that there wouldnt have been a queue of high caliber applicants if the job had been advertised (again).
he has the rest of the season to make a case for himself, so good luck to him.

Spot on, who would have been interested in working with Ashley, no top manager just somebody who had done nothing. You also have to take into account that players like him, if we changed him would it have had an effect on the team, players looking to go or losing morale.
We have also tried in the past with the so called names and failed, I not saying Chris is the guy, but lets try something different as everything else hasn't worked. I am backing him and well done for the job that you have done now

Keep things like this in mind: we're missing our top-scoring striker because of a very poor in-game personnel decision made by Hughton.
And I will argue with the performances. Other than Palace, Ipswich and Reading we have not won a game comfortably all season.

thats three games mind tunyc. if you say the last 5 have been our 'bad run', what does that leave? we havent played many more than that. the point was the comparison though, we had a good run then a bad run, in the good we deserved most of our points, in the bad we also got what we deserved.
we have lacked a cutting edge all season, but when we are at our strongest we simply dont give away any chances. its possession football, and its deliberate, playing to our strengths in the abscence of pacy attackers. pass them to death in midfield, and wear them down.
in the games we won, but not convinvingly, it has been becasue our possession hasnt led to second and third goals as quickly as it might have. thats the cutting edge we dont have.
absolutely agree about the needless injuries though. that game where shola and jonas left the bench and were hurt in the league cup was madness, poor management.

Right. Listen, I'm behind Hughton completely. I am completely confident that he can take us back up.
But now that he's the permanent gaffer, he bears more scrutiny, not less in my opinion. I hope he learned something from losing those two...

jeez, the more i read back through these threads, the more i see why i should spell check. i keep going straight to the 'post message' button without glancing upwards.
back to the point...agree again tunyc, accepting the job means hughton also accepts more scrutiny. hope he does well, and does it the way he wants to. also hope he has better luck with injuries than the last twenty guys seem to have had in his position.

Better luck with injuries would be nice. But I don't blame the manager for that completely. The only reason our injury crises have been so disastrous is the way the squad is constructed-too much spent on a first XI that often includes a gang of mercenaries, which dictates that there is no quality in depth. The blame for that can and should be spread widely.

Injuries will happen but it is amazing how many we get compared to other clubs. They need to go back to basics, is the training to easy/hard, medical staff sh@t, training facilities cr@p or something else.

You are right in the other post, it would be money well spent getting the injuries sorted, having one extra key player in the team could be money well spent if we got promoted

As a team, they are 100% behind Hughton. We currently look like a team that has been galvanised by good man management as they all seem to play for each other. He is doing a grand job and long may that continue.

You can only judge the lad on what he has done, so far he has done a great job and got the team going and put the confidence back in the team. I thought we were going to struggle when we lost loads of the players and thought we would finish mid table after the leeds pre season game as we were sh@t.
People talk about what will he be like in the transfer market but he hasn't had a chance yet and probaly won't under Ashley. If we do get back to the premiership, he will have little to spend and the team isn't good enough to compete and will struggle to stay up.
If he gets us promoted and keeps us in the premiership under the current state of how the club is run, then job done
