Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Preston NE v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
November 22 2009

Newcastle United travel to Deepdale where Preston North End host Monday night's Championship match for their first game after the international break. Newcastle will be aiming to retrieve top spot after being knocked into second by West Brom, whilst Preston will be looking for a convincing win to take them closer to the top 6.

Preston have lost just 1 game in their last six, drawn 3 and won 2, whilst Newcastle's form has picked up with 3 consecutive wins in their last 3 games on the back of 2 defeats and a draw.

Preston manager Alan Irvine could hand new loan signing, midfielder Michael Tonge his debut against Newcastle, as he continues to be without midfielder Barry Nicholson who is recovering from a broken leg.

Chris Hughton is without Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton as both are still absent with long-term injuries, however, Shola is expected to train with the first team this week. Zurab Khizanishvili is also excluded from the squad as he serves his final match of a 3 match suspension.

Jonas Gutierrez is expected to return after recovering from a thigh injury and being declared fit and this fixture see's Andy Carroll face some of his former team-mates, having previously spent half a season on loan at Preston.

New signing Fabrice Pancrate could feature tomorrow night, but only if the ratification of this registration and international clearance come through in time.

Fact: These two teams last met in 1987 in the fourth round of the FA Cup where Newcastle won 2-0 at St James' Park. Newcastle last travelled to Deepdale in 1980.

Smith has had a sniff or two so far, be great to see him get one.

Which of the following teams has been mentioned the most by the commontators tonight:

Preston
Newcastle
Watford

I do find it kind of insulting when people go on about Preston losing 2-0 to Watford on 7th November as I would much rather them say that Watford won that match.

I don't go to Vicarage Road to see the opponents lose. I go to see Watford win.

I would go to St James' Park (to give the ground its rightful name) on Saturday week, but unfortunately the train fares are unreasonably expension and the journey is too long, so I'll have to listen to it on Hornets Player.

Jonathan,

If Watford were playing I am sure that the reference would be the way you wish, but as they are highlighting the fact Preston lost - it makes sense that that is what they say.

Opposite side of the country its the North West that got hit (not that makes it any better mind)

I can honestly say this though if it happened in Newcastle we would hoy wor heeds ootside the winda and say, its drizzling again pet.

Mind if it was an ice age wor lasses would still be oot in mini skirts.

conversely yah can always tell when there is a heat wave in Newcastle as the old women undo the top button of their overcoat.

Great result against a tidy side but we were a bit divoid of ideas at times. Fair do's he was wanting to start Nolan up front but Harewood was again a let down and has had more than his fair chance. Ranger looked busy when he came on so would rather had him replace Taylor or Pancrete (I know it would be a little at the deep end) as Guthrie is no winger.

Jonas a bit disappointing with some terrible finishing. Smith had a busy game and broke up a lot of play with two good players in Tonge and Chaplow.

Just got home from work. Good to hear about the result. 1-0 away fixture with Preston is good enough. Hopefully Simpson's injury is just a knock and nothing serious.
