Player Ratings v Nottingham Forest

Jose Enrique was judged man of the match for his performance against Nottingham Forest last night by Tyne-Talk's resident player rating Wasim4nufc. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired as Newcastle United secured another three points........
Steve Harper (6) - Didn't have much to do really.
Danny Simpson (7) - I thought he had a fairly good game. Was efficient on both defence and attack.
Mike Williamson (7.5) - Made one outstanding last ditch tackle while the score was still 0-0 and was solid overall. Great to see him back after injury.
Fabricio Coloccini (7.5) - Formed a good partnership with Williamson and despite Forest having one or two chances at goal, he generally marshaled the defence well. He was also cool and calm as always.
Jose Enrique (8) - He started the game slowly but got into the game as it went on. Finished superbly to score our second and his first for the club. I've not been this happy to see a Newcastle player score for a very long time. Fully deserved though for it was his first game back and he seems to have picked up where he left off.
Wayne Routledge (8) - A few things stood out from his performance. Firstly he played a delightful cross into the box from which Carroll almost scored in the first half while his directness was excellent. He caused problems for the Forest defence on a number of occasions and he was down to be my man of the match before Enrique scored. Our best moves seemed to involve him most of the time.
Kevin Nolan (7) - He wasn't in the game enough in the first half for my liking but he sure got more involved in the second half. Nearly scored with a well taken shot and he can claim an assist for the first goal. His experience seemed to show in the second half as well.
Danny Guthrie (7) - Apart from some poor tackles which he could have been punished for on another day, he had a good game. Took one or two good free kicks while he seemed to tick things along in midfield. He does look so much more dangerous from the centre.
Jonas Gutierrez (6.5) - Not his most effective game but all credit to him for showing the work rate and commitment which has made him such a key player for us. His link up play with Enrique was excellent as always although he did over do things on occasions. That's part of his game though and to realise how dangerous he is, just watch how three players surround him in the build up to our second goal.
Peter Lovenkrands (6) - It wasn't his day today. Never really got into the game enough and his link up play with Carroll wasn't working too well either. He kept plugging away though so good on him.
Andy Carroll (6) - He wasted a couple of opportunities before going off just after half time. Hope the ankles not to bad but he needs to work on learning when to take an extra touch and when to shoot first time.
Substitutes
Shola Ameobi (7) - He got the vital break through with a good shot and set up Enrique with a neat back heel. Good to see him back and hopefully he can stake a claim for next season before the season closes.

You're a critical one, aren't you? In 40 minutes Shola gets the winner and sets up another and you rate him a 7...anyway, I'm just hoping he does well enough to attract a decent bid in the Summer. He's a decent squad player but we need better in the PL and he's the best candidate to go.

spot on wasim however i feel you were a bit harsh on lovenkrands he never stopped the whole night, he didn't get a goal but deserved atleast a 7 just for effort.
I was wanting enrique took off not long after half time, he was looking tired and off the pace, his running looked laboured and he wasn't his usual threat when on the attack, but fair play to the lad he finished the match strong and got the goal he has deserved all season

Spot on about Shola, a decent bid then let him go, he is not premiership class

have honestly no idea what the relative wages are, but if shola is on less than three times what best gets, he isnt the best candidate, for me. the pragmatism which gave shola a new contract 6 months before owen,martins and vid left turned out to be correct. the same reasoning holds today. shola isnt much good. we arent either. lets look forward to the day we sign great strikers, til then, keep the best we have?

I suppose I was a bit harsh on Shola as he perhaps deserved a higher rating for changing the game. I do think we should keep him though, as he is capable of doing what he did in the premier league as well.

I do give him credit for not giving up and fighting for the team but I just feel effort alone shouldn't have been the factor that gave him a 7. Alan Smith would then be getting at least a 7 for each match as he always plays with tons of passion so that's why I decided against giving Lovenkrands a 7.

Totally agree with that. I would much rather keep Shola than the untested Leon Best in the premiership.

Oh, right-I actually completely forgot about Best...yeah, I'd keep Shola over him. We still need to get in someone better than what we have in that position, though.

I would let both go, Shola has been tried and have failed while Best has struggled since arriving. I would go after Beckford again, out of contract, so he is free. He may be un tested but if he has cost you nothing and not on big wages then if he is sh@t who cares, if he is good enough then we have got a steal and we are laughing

No way I'd go for Beckford. I think taking him up two leagues is a big risk unless he'll play for peanuts.

Apparently Albin is also available for free or something like that, so its more likely we have better options now than Beckford.

Oh come now-you know we're not going to pay for established stars. Pursuing Beckford was a case of trying to get a kid with big upside before he realizes it and his value goes beyond what we can attain.
Of course, like most prospects, he'll likely never achieve that upside. Certainly wouldn't take the risk with top-flight status riding on his performance and his having played in all of 5 games in the ccc.

Agreed. Beckford in January would have been nice, tidy business with a chance to see if he was up for the task. Beckford in June is too much of a risk. He's not a kid anymore. He is 26 years old and has only played 10 games in the second division. Between Beckford on a free or an 18 year old no-name from a foreign league for a half million, I'll take the 18 year old every day.

beckford doesnt stand out as a potential buy because he hasnt played even at the level we have all agreed to be way below premier league, ie the ccc. (5 games=hasnt played,whatever). there are surely others to target before dropping to that level?
a point: several people have mentioned that whilst shola scores lots of goals in the ccc, he will not be good enough for the prem, as it will be harder to score as often. now, resolve this with the viewpoint that beckfords goals in div 1 are a pointer that he is ready to step up? leeds fans do not regard his overall play as a strenghth btw, just his finishing (and then, not since january!)

I am not going to get into the big Beckford debate and the last thing I am going to say on him is that he is a free contract and bound to be on small wages 15k more than likely so worth the gamble. Will he be better than Best, I think so. Shola may be tested but he has been cr@p in the top flight, I would rather take the chance on Beckford as he can't be much worse.
Waffles - it is going to be hard to find this half a million young talent from abroad, all clubs dream of this, and hopefully Chris will have one tucked away, you have to remember we have Ranger, and I would rather see him developed than Best or Shola

No doubt, finding the talent will be hard, but all I'm saying is if we're going to spend money on an untested player, at least let him be young enough that he has time to develop. At 26 years old, Beckford is as good now as he'll likely ever be.

beckford isnt as good as shola, nor could he ever be a replacement for him. they dont fill the same role in the team. i was just using the lack of faith in shola, even though he scores regularly (and has been there and done it, but he wont ever convince some. he's coming along next season, thats all you need to know), as a question for those who reckon a few sunday league goals make beckford a target for a premier league club.

From what I've seen, Shola and Beckford actually are pretty similar. They're both big forwards who don't really play a big forward's game. Shola's somewhat better at holding up the ball; Beckford has more pace.
Frankly, I'd rather stick with Shola as we know what we're getting-a squad player in the PL.
Again, Beckford brought directly up to the PL is a gamble. It's a much easier gamble to take on for a team with some depth. If we took him on, he'd be starting if we had just one or two injuries up top. Not good.
Would rather have someone unexciting but established-James Beattie, Kanu, someone like that.

kanu is an interesting shout tunyc. hasnt been a regular starter for a while, but he has loads ofexperience and would offer something very different to what we have now. do you mean as an 'impact sub', or to replace someone in the line up?

I wouldn't call it either, lmk-I'm thinking that with promotion, we're going to have a lot of guys who started all the time in the ccc having to compete for a spot (see Nolan, Kevin). I do think a Kanu or a Beattie could very well work their way into the starting XI on the strength of their top flight experience.

What the F@ck if you are thinking about Kanu, have we not learnt from the past of buying players who are past it.
Beattie is a great shout, and has fell out at Stoke so we could get him cheap and he still has it

Just considering PL-experienced players who won't cost the moon and are available. Kanu's one of them. I also like the idea of getting a veteran up top with some nous to go along with our younger, more athletic forwards.
I understand the preference for Beattie and agree with it, but we need more than one iron in the fire and his run-in with Pulis is a bit worrisome for a team like ours that has gotten so much out of unity and discipline this term.
Can't be so emotional when making administrative decisions, TTID.

I am not being emotional I just think the guy is sh@t and past his best, I agree we need a balance of experience and youth and Beattie comes into that catergory. Kanu is lazy and we have built a team that is hard working. Personally I would like to see us go for a forward with pace, which does mean that Beattie won't be the guy anyway.
But the lad is worth a gamble if Carroll goes or to play both away from home, Davies from Bolton is another

Probably needs another thread with which players people fancy but I liked the look of Dickson Etuhu's brother Kelvin when he was playing for Cardiff recently.
Didnt know but when checked he is on Man City's books as a right winger/striker. I cant think of a harder team to try and make your name at than City if you know what I mean.
