Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Sunderland v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United travel to The Stadium of Light tomorrow where Sunderland host the 2nd League derby of the season. With kick off at 12pm to avoid problems in the pubs, the game is not being shown on television.
Both sides are not only close in the league but have picked up an identical under of points from their last six games, when Newcastle have lost, drawn or won, Sunderland have lost, drawn or won their respective games. Therefore both sides have won 3 and lost 3 of their last six games, both being knocked out of the FA Cup last weekend to lower League opposition.
Back in October Chris Hughton saw his side humiliate Sunderland with a 5-1 hammering at St James’ Park, now current manager Alan Pardew will be seeking a repeat performance in this return fixture, without his main striker.
Andy Carroll (thigh) has failed to recover in time for the game, but Shola Ameobi (ankle) should return. Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) and Ryan Taylor (ankle) are both out, but Dan Gosling (knee) could make his first team debut after playing behind closed doors in midweek.
Cheik Tiote begins a three match ban for being risked and then sent off last weekend against Stevenage, whilst Sol Campbell continues to be a doubt through illness and Steven Taylor is also 50/50 to play.
Jose Enrique, Steve Harper and Jonas Gutierrez are all expected to be available.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is without Michael Turner (knee), John Mensah (ankle), Fraizer Campbell (knee) and David Meyler (cruciate ligament), whilst Lee Cattermole (back) and Danny Welbeck (hamstring) both have a 50/50 chance of playing.
Defender Nedum Onuoha (hamstring) is also expected to return.
Fact: 80% of Sunderland’s goals have been scored by strikers – a higher % than any other club.
Fact: Alan Pardew has an unbeaten record against Sunderland in the Premier League.
Fact: Shola Ameobi has scored in his last three games against Sunderland – a goal on Sunday will see him match Jackie Milburn’s record of 1955.

Something tells me Wellbeck and Onuoha are both going to make this game. Wellbeck and Bent are both dangerous but if our CBs can handle them I don't know that there's much else to fear from them. Cattermole I'm 50/50 about-don't want him out there to break our guys' legs but then he's always likely to get himself sent off, so...

I am really disappointed in Sky/ESPN that neither of them seen fit to broadcast the best derby match in the EPL. The north east fans are some of the most loyal, football fanatical fans in the world.
Hopefully a decent stream will show up to let me see us sink them mackems again.

Always find it strange how here in South Africa most of the matches are broadcast, even some nPower games.
We get bundesliga, la liga, lique 1, even some serie a and portuguese football.
But you guys are seldom able to get the matches, always looking for a stream, and they are being played in your back yard..

there are 380 premier league matches a season. something like 140 are shown live on tv, but all of these are subscription only tv - none are free to air. and there are never two games shown at once (except the last day of the season) so if we arent picked for tv, like today, we need a stream.

well we were hard done by to only get 1 point we were the better team.
Personally I wouldn't have made the subs near the end as we were playing well and they didnt add much too our play.
on a good note tho thats 4 points off those sad mackem bar stewards. and a good preformance too, if it wasn't for that lucky goal.

Reading everyone's comments it seems we were unlucky not to get the win.
I'm happy that we beat them at home and drew away.

Would've took the point beforehand though, the extra two would've been handy mind (we'd have gone 7th, two points behind those @#$%& with a game in hand).

Too bad about the goal. I've heard it described as lucky by most commenters. Did 5 minutes of added time seem right? Would have been nice to see it out just to stuff that turncoat, Bruce. Tackles- 1 of 3 won
D. Guthrie:
Passing- 20 of 30 successful
Tackles- 4 of 4 won
With Guthrie and Gosling back and then Tiote in a few weeks, Smith shouldn't get near the starting XI.

just to colour those stats in a bit tunyc, more than one of guthries missed passes went straight to the oppo in space. thats worse than a pass to no-one, or a pass straight out of play for a throw.
he got better, but the 15 or so mins guthrie had to play until half time were awful.
colo was incredible, enrique was...enrique, barton kept his very good personal form up, jonas gave them many many problems, more than any other attacker really, and maybe best of all no-one let the side down, on the overall balance of their play (like i said above, guthrie did pick it ip after half time).
this was no super performance, but it was disciplined, spirited, progressive and determined. the more i think about it we should have won, but this was a game i for one dint expect anything from so a draw shouldnt be a dissappointment. if there is a way to approach a home game against spurs, without tiote, surely it would be to replicate todays performance and hope for the breaks, such as ameobi bagging one of his two fine chances, or colo's shot not being turned off the line.

Context is important-BUT, consider this is Guthrie's first league game in a while and that my point is relative. I see people above call Smith's injury a blessing in disguise. Telling. As are his stats, which are horrid. Tiote is on another level-his last two league games he only failed to complete 8 of 109 attempted passes. He's the guy we need in there, but if Smith is second choice we seriously lack depth.
Hopefully spurs will be at an emotional low-they dominated large stretches of the game today and had a man advantage for 12 minutes. They should have won. This was a chance to make a statement about their ambitions and they failed to do so.

Williamson received praise as well.

His tackles might be strong but if he is getting booked or giving away free kicks then thats no good. As for his passing or retaining possession well I think we all know. As LMK said I heard Guthrie had a canny second half and even though he is no Tiote and he isnt the quickest least he can retain possession and get us pushing in the right direction.

i heard that as it happened biff. they went huge on it on the radio, but the tv feed i was watching showed nothing. i asked three makems at the match if they saw, none did. its true though, a makem ran on and bundled harper to the ground. pushed him from behind. the police identified him - with help from the fans around him - and marched him out, past bruce who bollocked him on the way past. 6 hours later i saw a pic. he must have been 13 years old. somehow its sadder, rather than outrageous, that its a kid and not a real threat to any of the guys on the pitch.
shame it happened, but i guess what i'm saying is that it sounded a lot worse at the time.

did they show the chair throwing on motd too ? Some little knackers on both sides started chucking chairs etc on the way out. They aren't true supporters imo just thugs who are there only to cause trouble, i hope they are alsao caught and banned from further matches.
