Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Arsenal

By Tyne-Talk
February 4 2011

Newcastle United host Arsenal tomorrow afternoon on the back of a 1-0 defeat in midweek. Alan Pardew’s team have lost two, drawn two and won two of their last six games in all competitions, whilst Arsenal have won six out of six.

In the corresponding fixture, Newcastle beat Arsenal 1-0 with a goal by former striker Andy Carroll; however, this time around they will have to rely on Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands.

Newcastle United are also without striker Shola Ameobi who could be out for 6 weeks after he fractured his cheekbone against Fulham in midweek. Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg), Dan Gosling (knee), Ryan Taylor (ankle), Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Stephen Ireland (hamstring) also remain absent.

Cheik Tiote will return from a three match ban and is expected to be named in the starting eleven.

Arsene Wenger is without Alex Song (thigh), Denilson (hamstring), Samir Nasri (hamstring), Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) and Lukasz Fabianski (shoulder), whilst Sebastien Squaillaci returns from suspension.

Fact: Newcastle have won just 2 of their last 16 Premier League games against Arsenal.

Fact: Kevin Nolan is looking for his 50th Premier League goal.

I'm certainly not going to predict a score for this one.

I just hope AP doesn't leave Tiote on too long if he gets a yellow. The next 8 games are extremely important and we need him in as many of them as possible.

Thats quite an injury list you've got there, but be aware that our most consistent and probably most important performers this season have been Nasri and Song, and they are both missing. Plus our squad is further weakened by the return of Squillaci.

I expect a draw, dont see either side breaking the other down. But watch out for RvP, he's having the good month that he has every year, before getting himself injured for the other 11.

cheers

Arsenal have to win this, they cant afford to fall any further behind man u.

it wouldnt be first time our league challenge has come a cropper on Tyneside, but Fabregas, Wilshere, Diaby and Arshavin should be too much for the Geordies

With the squad we have available, we need to make this game even more physically uncomfortable for Arsenal than the last one.

^^^I think that that would be the best way to attack us today. With no Alex Song playing, we look far less physical in the MF. If Jack gets an early yellow, again, you fellows will test us alright.

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

The most we can hope for is a draw in my opinion.

I just hope we don't get thumped.

I dare say we'll be playing for a draw. If Tiote can stay on the field and we don't actually have to play Campbell we may hold out for a draw.

There is a huge diffence.

We also have ANOTHER injured striker!

Half time.
Worst performance I have ever seen.
Arsenal have not been fantastic, we have just been utter garbage.
I think all the players must have gone to Liverpool last night to see Carroll, got hammered and only just made it back for the game.
Well, that's what it looks like to me.
Does anybody else think that Best looks stoned out of his mind?
What's he been smoking?

Along with Barton, Tiote, and Best, I thought Simpson had a fantastic game, and was one of the few players who showed up in the first half as well.

It's a shame that one must doubt Ashley at all times now, because we've got two excellent fullbacks right now, and our Center halves (although today was not pretty), are great as well. And while the first half today was disgraceful, I still think this is the best back line I've ever seen at Newcastle.

agreed simpson had a good game, we should of won 5 - 4 how that goal was disallowed as offside is beyond me, let us have the lineswoman any day of the week.

well done lads, good spirit and the best comeback ever in the premiership (offical). Hopefully this will get there tails up.

Ranger should start ahead of lovenkrands was very good when he came on. Also after waatching all the game on sky I honestly thought we created more 1st half than the media were letting on and were unlucky to be 4 - 0 down really.

Reading from the start of this thread just shows how fickle some of us are.
Even if we had lost 8-0 yesterday, we've still had a great season so far.
There's no shame in losing to Arsenal when they're at their best, even if our defense was shocking.
So @#$%& anyone who switched off or stopped watching or left the stadium.
As painful as it was first half, I didn't turn it off, and those of us who kept the faith were mightily rewarded! tbh I'm a little amazed we didn't end up winning 5-4!
Drop lovenkrands next game, start Ranger and Best! Top half table finish is not only on the cards but now almost in the bag!

I was seriously thinking of doing player ratings for each half for it was certainly two different performances in each half.

As for next week, I think Ranger should be given a start just to see if he can use some of today's momentum to get his confidence up. He certainly made an impact when coming on.
