June 18 2012
Newcastle United have tabled an £8million bid for FC Twente's Luuk De Jong according to Sky Sports. The 21 year old striker, who scored 30 goals last season has sparked an interest from several Premier League teams including Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool, but FC Twente are said to be considering a bid from Newcastle this evening.
Earlier today the Dutchman was quoted discussing a move to Benfica, but insisted that he was happy at FC Twente. He told Antena 1;
"I have only read about Benfica's interest on the internet. If Benfica want me, they will have to talk to Twente.
They are a great club, I played against Benfica a few months ago. They play good football and have good players.
I am happy at Twente, but it would be a good club to take the next step in my career. I am sure that I could learn a lot there and improve as a player.
Let's wait to see if there is something concrete."

I mean I think Ba is going anyway, it's would be nice for once if we had a replacement ready
I'm sorry, but given both Demba's have said they'd like to perform in the Olympics AND the African Cup of Nations next year, and factor in the potential for injuries, suspensions, change of tactics throughout the season it seems to me that a third striker is necessary.
Besides - he's young and may need a bedding in period.
It doesn't mean that Ba has to go, its looked likely for a while now that he is going and he's never came out and said whatever happens i'm staying!
Pardew has always said he wanted to add an extra striker to the squad so it has always been planned but i think to try and sign a top striker like De Jong shows that they are expecting Ba to leave!
If we play 4-3-3 then cisse undoubtedly will get the central position, that leaves HBA, Ba and De jong to fight it out for the other 2 places! One of those 3 will have to be content with being a sub and i cant see any of them wanting that!
I may be wrong but if they thought Ba was staying then they would be going for strikers who were better than Best and Ameobi but happy to play back up to our existing first choice strike force! I cant see De Jong moving here to fight his way into the first team from the bench and would imagine the club will tell him he's going to be one of the first choices.
I would feel a lot better about thinking him a replacement for Best, I just doubt it will be unfortanetly.
As for Shola leaving, I have read this so many times over the years I will only believe it when I see it.
If an atom bomb was dropped on St James, Shola would still be there
