Match Thread Wolves vs Brentford Town

By Wolves
January 2 2018

Wolves face Brentford Town in front of what is likely to be a huge Molineux crowd tonight after their last minute important win at the weekend.

They will hoping to score at least one more goal than they managed at Brentford in August when the match finished 0-0. Danny Batth will definitely not be playing having lost the Club's appeal aginst his dismissal at Bristol. He will now serve a three match ban.

Bennett for Batth the only change from the starting 11.

Nuno keeps faith in Costa with Cav remaining on the bench.

Personally, after the last match I would have dropped Costa, though perhaps this decision will inspire Costa to a return to form. He was totally off it on saturday. Nothing to lose I suppose but Cav may be somewhat disappointed.

Anyway - a good side to hopefully take the sting out of the bees?

As Ivybridge says, only one change to tonight's line-up:

Ruddy, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Saiss, Neves, Douglas, Costa, Jota, Bonatini

Subs: Norris, Vinagre, Hause, N'Diaye, Gibbs-White, Cavaleiro, Enobakhare

Wolves go close straight away. Good run by Costa and he feeds Leo who hits the post. Possibly a good save

Corner to Wolves. Bennett header cleared off the line. Brentford then try and hit us on the break.

Willy Boly dinks a ball forward to Doherty who brings out a good save

Brentford are having their fair share of possession so far. They are playing quite a high line at the back which could be dangerous for them considering the speed of players like Costa and Jota, and the accuracy of Neves' passing.
Costa brought down on a break which brings a yellow card for Watkins. Step up Barry Douglas!!

Brentford go close with a free kick. This clearly isn't a team to be treated lightly.
Personally I was amazed to see Nuno field an unchanged team after playing with ten men for 75 minutes three days ago!

Daniel Bentley sounds as though he is the main reason that we haven't yet broke the deadlock - this tmpered by the fact we have 'loosed' them in on a couple of occasions.

All to play for in the second half

Half time. Brentford have had the greater amount of possession, but Wolves have had four opportunities to score, Nuno not looking happy on the side line. Thommo thinks Jota is looking 'leggy' so we could see the early introduction of Cav again & hope he makes the same difference as he did on Saturday

That celebration of Nuno's for the late goal at Bristol was one of the funniest things I have seen for a while. But I do fear he is going to explode. And perhaps someone might quietly take him aside and explain the concept of the box he is supposed to stand in, because every time the camera was on him he seemed to be wandering elsewhere.

B.ugger

Had 2-0 as my correct score.

Bizarre goal from a corner - Jota had two bites of the cherry, mised the first, landed on his back then swung his boot again and back of the net!!

They all count.

The virtual table is amazing 61 points to us ............ Derby next on 49 - absolutely nobody in the 50's!!

UTW!

I'd go so far as to say this is one of the best teams in England at the moment. When you consider how weak the premiership is bar man city ( who we stopped from scoring ) I'd say there is nothing to fear next season assuming we go up. If we can keep the same ambition levels, I fully expect a challenge for the top 6 nest season as a realistic aim.. look at the garbage in the prem

West Brom
Huddersfield
West spam
Watford
Southampton
Newcastle
Brighton
Palace
Bournemouth
Stoke
Swansea etc etc

I would back us to beat all those teams comfortably which is 11 of the 20 teams right there

That's it. Full time, Wolves 3 Brentford 0 Goals from Neves, Douglas and Jota.

Our team came to life in the second half and took control.

We are now 12 points ahead of trailing teams in the Championship, It's enought to cause vertigo.

On to the FA Cup against Swansea at Molineux on Saturday, probably with a very much changed side.

Don't disagree - a good time to go up, just need to keep 'plodding on'!

We're not the finished article, I suppose what team is, however in my view our main danger is ourselves - a lot of the panics around our box that I have seen this season are when we turn off or balls up a pass.

What a great team! Again, tonight the excitement factor is high.

I think the premier league is incredibly weak these days, when you consider the millions that United have spent for eg, Arsenal have no spine, Everton are the weakest they have been in years. If Burnley can challenge for the top 6 , we certainly can and maybe beyond..

After years of misery on here , perhaps the infamous building plan is actually taking shape gentlemen ( and ladies). This time 2 years ago we were playing infront of sub 20 k crowds looking forward to a 12 year old signing for the academy scheduled to feature in 2025- now we have proven quality players ripping the league up. I think this finally puts pay to the money not mattering in football sh1te we have had to read from the beetroot head apologists over the years. On to the next one we go (Sm100)

Put it this way .... we need 14 points in 20 matches to earn a play off place and probably no more than 29 from said 20 matches for promotion.

That is the kind of maths that tickle ya cockles.

Nuno however will just be looking at Barnsley on 13th January.

All eyes on the team now v Swansea - I'd like to see a good core of our '1st team' playing but accept this is likly not the case

Just got back from the match. The comments on here pretty much sum it up.
Brentford had more possession in the first half but we had the better chances. I can't think of Ruddy being seriously tested whereas Wolves hit the post, had another cleared off the line and their 'keeper made a good save. Costa was through one on one with the 'keeper and last season would surely have scored. He didn't play badly, Costa, but he isn't firing like last season. Maybe he needs some games but how the hell are you going to get them in this team?
The second half was a different kettle of fish. We started well with a good run and shot by Bonatini and then came the free-kick from Neves. What a beauty. We may have paid, what by our previous standards, was a lot of money for him but at £15m or £17.5m or whatever it was, he was a steal. I was still getting over it when Douglas hit another belter proving that his right foot isn't just to stop him falling over.
Again, Coady played well, hitting some lovely passes around and reading the game. I can't believe he is the same player as before. Boly is a bloody beast. if Scotland have a better left-back than Douglas I'd like to see him. Neves pulled the strings in the second half and Saiss (another improved from last season) made for a good combination.
On performances like this, the gap we have at the top has got more chance of doubling than narrowing.

I honestly believe Nuno is a man of conscience and is here for the long battle. I think he is enjoying what he has created at Wolves and appreciates the support he gets from Fosun in team building etc. It's a big move to be a statistic at another club. I hope that's the case anyway!!

Whilst I would like to share your enthusiasm and accept that the Prem is not the best it could be the teams will all present a stronger challenge than we are being set at the moment and our confidence is high. Playing at the level we are now will be harder to sustain in the Prem and a few poor results could see a dip in morale/form/results.

Just watched the extended highlights of the game. What a classy team our Wolves are!! So many positive aspects to the game. I have to agree with Andy F re: Connor Coady - he has simply grown massively in confidence and skill in his new position and as captain, and he barely gives the ball away, but is becoming the master of long passes from the back.

The only thing lacking from him this season is a goal - every one of our other regular outfield players have scored this season which is quite remarkable!

Every player contributes to the result and is involved by his team mates. Neves rules the midfield without doubt, and it seems our wing backs are always available to take a pass on the wings.

One thing is for sure. Deciding which goal to vote for for Goal Of The Season, and which player to vote for for Player Of The Season is going to be hellish hard when the time comes!!
