Match Thread: RCD Espanyol vs Wolves

And so..... Wolves ambitions to excel in this year's Europa League continue when they face RCD Espanyol in the return leg of the final 16 knockout stage in Barcelona tomorrow evening. Wolves take a 4 - 0 lead into the game from the first leg courtesy of a fantastic display of a hatrick by Diogo Jota and another long distance smash from Ruben Neves.
Fans will be hoping Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo and his team can attain Wolves' first ever win in Spain, to be sure of going through to the Quarter Finals of the competition. It is generally suspected that Espanyol will put out a better team than the one last week, and of course there is the suspicion that Nuno may rest a few of his players for the important upcoming PL match at Spurs on Sunday. We may perhaps see Daniel Podence make his first start and Max Kilman may feature in another game, possibly alongside Ruben Vinagre.

We will be in the round before the quarter-finals (well, hopefully) and looking at some of the sides that seem as though they will be there as well, this is when it will heat up.

Wolves have settled into their stride now and are largely dictating the game. Espanyol are poor - they went close to getting a second but missed it and Calleri was adjudged offside anyway

Good break between MGW Podence & Adama but final pass from MGW is poor.
Half time whistle goes. Wolves are very much holding their own despite an early setback when Espanyol took their goal well, but Adama struck back swiftly aided by DP.

Half Time 1-1 (5-1 to Wolves).
We grew into the game with a bit of fluidity after the equalizer but there were a few shaky moments in defense that a better quality team might have punished more. Anyway we are in better shape than when we started today with the away goal.

Not our best performance but holding our own so far.
Would like to see Campana given an outing and perhaps rest Traore for Spurs match.
Podence looking as if he is settling into our formation and style of play quite nicely.

The crowd is pretty sparse in the stadium - but they cheer up when a penalty is given against Kilman for a high boot. Caller I sends Rui the wrong way and restores Espanyol's lead

3 - 2 on the night but Wolves move into the next round with an aggregate score of 6 - 3

A lacklustre performance generally speaking. Was about to sing the praises of Neto and he then misses an open goal!!! Kilman impresses again and Podence has a full game under his belt with two assists. MGW failed to take his chance and I can see Nuno losing patience with him.
So much talk about keeping a clean sheet and our defence gets all dozy and will need to sharpen up before we play Spurs.
Still, some players rested so roll on Sunday.

We’re through but disappointing on the night. Neto nets his open goal and we win, simple as but we probably didn’t do enough to deserve that but a draw would have been fair. Complacency? Just off the pace? Not sure but in cup football the biggest question is if you’m in the hat and we am!
I said they weren’t a bad side in the first match, Angry, especially at the start! Very neat and tidy on many occasions, kept the ball well but no cutting edge. Clearly no where near good enough to progress and always there for the taking.
Is the draw tomorrow?

Well they're bl00dy awful Ivy , yes the draw is tomorrow . I'd like Inter milan as it's the foreign team I used to support as a kid but whether I'd be able to go due to the man made corona virus is another matter

Some big sides have gone. Ajax, Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon are all out and Arsenal currently losing.
