Leigh Genesis 0 Ossett Town 6

Just ten days ago, Leigh Genesis were celebrating a famous victory away to neighbours FC United of Manchester, but now they are left to lick their wounds as visitors Ossett Town found it almost embarrassingly easy at Hurst Cross to inflict Leigh’s heaviest defeat of the season.

In front of a paltry crowd at Ashton United's Hurst Cross ground, Leigh never managed to get going in the early stages and fell behind in the twelfth minute when the ball was flicked through for Ossett skipper Rob O'Brien to choose and loop a delightful strike over Genesis goalkeeper Dean Porter.

The visitors doubled their lead just four minutes later when Leigh centre back Nia Bayunu committed a foul on the edge of his own penalty area. Although Porter saved O'Brien's resultant free kick, the young goalkeeper succeeded in only spilling it to the feet of Simon Baldry, who made no mistake in converting the rebound.

Leigh finally managed to retain enough possession to create a chance of their own on the half hour mark when a neat passing move ended with a deflection taking the sting out of an Andy Heald strike and the ball rolling through to largely untested Ossett goalkeeper John Lamb, a former cult hero on the Hilton Park terraces.

Ossett managed to chalk up a third goal on the stroke of half time when Andy Lee's left wing cross flew across the face of goal for Baldry to claim his second goal of the evening when sliding in at the back post.

The Leigh defence managed to prevent any further damage for almost the first twenty five minutes of the second half, but a fourth goal appeared to be an inevitability, and it duly arrived on sixty nine minutes when Andy Lee curled a delightful free kick past Porter from twenty five yards.

Eleven minutes from time, Phil Marsh forced a smart save from Lamb but, almost to demonstrate their domination, Ossett responded by promptly counter-attacking and scoring their fifth goal of the evening when Aiden Savory slotted past Porter.

The rout was painfully completed in stoppage time when Tom Greaves broke clear of an invisible Genesis defence to score his side's sixth goal of the evening.

Leigh now travel to Ilkeston Town on Saturday afternoon in the hope that they can rediscover the promising form that has deserted them in the past week before welcoming former Football League outfit Boston United to Radcliffe Borough's Stainton Park ground next Tuesday (3rd March, 7:45pm kick off).
