FC United of Manchester slipped to their first defeat of the season on Saturday as Nantwich Town scored two late goals to claim a 2-1 victory. Matthew Wolfenden opened the scoring, but two goals in the final 11 minutes turned the game on its head and gave the visitors maximum points in front of 1,969 spectators at Gigg Lane.

Late goals from Niall Maguire and second half substitute Mat Bailey condemned Karl Marginson’s Red Rebels to their first defeat of the new season.

FC United had taken the lead shortly before the hour-mark as Wolfdenden dispatched a cool finish beyond visiting goalkeeper Jonny Brain.

However, FCUM’s seven-match unbeaten start to the season was ended by Nantwich’s spirited comeback.

The result leaves FC fifth in the Northern Premier League table, with a trip to Stafford Rangers next up before attentions turn to an FA Cup tie against Salford City.
