Manchester United - FA Cup Winners, 2016
May 22 2016
Get in! Manchester United won the 2016 FA Cup in a tense contest, with Jesse Lingaard grabbing the winner amid intense speculation concerning the future of Louis van Gaal.
No sooner that van Gaal had lifted the Cup aloft did intense speculation begin that he is on the verge of being replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho, who watched Shannon Briggs and David Haye make short work of their opponents at Saturday’s boxing from London, remained largely tight-lipped on the speculation, but a deal, according to reports, will be agreed in the days which follow.
Van Gaal may feel aggrieved at the way United have handled his possible departure – particularly with the news coming only hours after his greatest achievement in the Old Trafford hot seat.
Lingaard won the Cup for United with a fine piece of ingenuity. After a neat cross by Antonio Valencia, a flicked on ball found its way to the 23-year-old and he hammered home a slick finish to the delight of the Red Army.
The winning goal came 20 minutes into extra-time, and with United down to ten men after Chris Smalling was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Substitute Jason Puncheon's far-post finish looked to have set Palace up for their first major honour with only 12 minutes remaining, but United quickly fought back courtesy of Juan Mata Garcia following a mazy run from the highly-impressive midfield maestro Wayne Rooney. The equaliser was just rewards for a United side who had hit the woodwork via Marouane Fellaini and Antony Martial.
With van Gaal likely to be heading for the exit door, this fine win at least cements his position in United's history in a far more positive light, with the Red Devils once again the darlings of the competition again - levelling up with Arsenal on a dozen triumphs. Manchester United - FA Cup Winners, 2016. Fantastic.
