Poor defensive display helps Dortmund to smash United
July 28 2016
Panic will doubtless set in among the Twitterati as Jose Mourinho's Manchester United suffered a 4-1 friendly defeat against Borussia Dortmund, in an International Champions Cup fixture played in China.
Sporting blue jerseys, United included new signings Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in their starting XI, with Sam Johnstone handed the chance to impress between the sticks.
Despite taking 25 players, Mourinho named only nine substitutes - despite being permitted to select 11.
The manner of United's defeat will doubtless cause some unnecessary early worry among the Red Devils faithful - with many on Twitter bemoaning the result. However, Dortmund's pre-season preparations are at a different stage, and Mourinho's new charges need a lot more time to impress before any panic button is pushed.
The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes in sloppy defensive fashion for United. Johnstone spilled a slow long-range free-kick, before Gonzalo Castro turned into the roof of his net after a brief, clumsy game of penalty box table tennis.
A set piece, too, led to the second. Antonio Valencia handled a Dortmund overhead kick, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang comfortably dispatched from 12 yards.
The third game came three minutes before the hour mark with Dortmund's new acquisition Ousmane Dembele skilfully surging forward, easily beating Marcus Rojo and firing beyond substitute goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The German outfit looked fitter, sharper and far more composed.
Mkhitaryan grabbed a goal back for United to complete a slick passing move. Daley Blind's defence-splitting pass found Juan Mata, who squared for the former Dortmund man to slide the ball into an empty net.
However, a jaw-dropping long range goal from Castro restored the three goal advantage for the Bundesliga club. Whilst it is too early to worry, United's poor defensive display will give Mourinho plenty to consider as pre-season preparations continue.
