United will face Burton for third time in League Cup clash
August 24 2017
Burton Albion will travel to Old Trafford in the third round of the League Cup.
The third round draw controversially took place at 4.15am UK time, in Beijing, with no television coverage.
United's clash with the Brewers will mark the start of their defence of the trophy, won in a trophy-laden opening season at the helm for Jose Mourinho, during which he also won the Europa League and Community Shield.
Burton reached this stage of the competition following a 2-1 win at Cardiff City.
This will be the third meeting between the two sides, after United needed a replay to beat non-league Burton in the FA Cup in 2006.A goalless draw in Staffordshire was followed up with a 5-0 home win at Old Trafford, with Louis Saha, Kieran Richardson, Ryan Giggs and a Giuseppe Rossi brace proving decisive.
Burton have enjoyed a rapid rise through the leagues over the previous decade, with manager Nigel Clough receiving plaudits for guiding the club to Championship safety on a low budget last season.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest travelling to Chelsea looks an eye-catching tie, as does Burnley entertaining Leeds United. All matches are scheduled to be played on the week commencing 18 September.
