Denis Irwin - Exit A Legend

Irwin quits professional football having claimed almost every honour available in club football, with Premiership, F.A Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield and of course European Cup medals in his collection. The 38-year-old played an integral part in United's dominance of the English game during the mid and late 1990's, and will always be remembered for his effort, passion, commitment and professionalism. He left United after the 2001/2002 season, and helped Wolverhampton Wanderers to play-off glory the following season.

Irwin started his career at Elland Road, before moving to Lancastrian rivals Oldham Athletic on a free transfer. The Irishman spent over 4 years at Boundary Park before he joined the club he will be best remembered at, Manchester United. Irwin made the majority of his 902 club appearances with the Red Devils, enjoying 12 seasons under Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed the left-back for just over £625,000.

"Denis' career has been one of absolute distinction." said his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson after hearing the news of Irwin's departure from the game.

"His greatest years were here and I was fortunate to get him for what everybody would consider a steal at £625,000.

"It is great for Denis to be able to look back on the career he has had, and he was never anything less than a fantastic professional."

His current boss at Wolverhampton Wanderers Dave Jones had this to say about the Irishman: "He is a super pro and if the kids and some senior players have not picked anything up from him then they are fools to themselves."

"Denis deserves a standing ovation not just for what he has done for Wolves, but throughout his career."
