City go bottom after Torquay defeat

Lincoln City have slipped to the bottom of the table after the 20th defeat of Chris Sutton's time at Sincil Bank. The Imps started well and had a goal disallowed before Torquay scored from their first attack of the game, but yet more poor defending cost the Imps and the 2-0 defeat now puts City bottom of League Two.

City started the game well with Jarrett shooting just wide within the first two minutes. Carayol and Jarrett again links up well several minutes latter with the latter feed in McCallum. The striker turned and played the ball into the net, although his celebrations were cut short as he was ruled offside. Hughton had a shot blocked before a City free kick appeared to be handled in the area by a Torquay defender, but there was no penalty.

The Imps were well on top of the game and even Drewe Broughton nearly scored. Torquay's first real foray into City's half saw them win a free kick. Nicholson took it and Benyon headed it in at the near post. It had been an underserved goal after City had dominated the first 25 minutes of the game.

Jarrett again played another ball into the box and Drewe Broughton met it with his head, only to see his effort from 6 yards go wide of the target. That was pretty much the last action of a half that City had dominated but were nevertheless going in behind.

The second half came around and the only change for either side was Carayol changing his boots, replacing his bright blue ones for a white pair, they didn't help.

A run on goal from Benyon saw him collide with Anyon, something that the goalkeeper certainly wasn't impressed with. That waspretty much the only action of the first 15 minutes of the second half. City were generally on top again but couldn't really get anywhere near the goal.

Delroy Facey and Hutchinson came on for Broughton and McCallum with 30 minutes remaining. Hutchinson was quickly played in for a one-on-one but couldn't even get his eventual shot on target.

Torquay then did exactly what they did in the first half and scored with a rare break away. Zebroski ran down the right wing towards Green, the defender constantly backing off before Zebroski crossed to the unmarked Benyon and he headed into an unguarded backpost.

Bevan saved a downward header from Facey and that was pretty much it. Neither side managed any other shots and the game ended 2-0. City went bottom of the table after the defeat, whereas Torquay stayed top, although they did win their first two games in the season they got relegated.
