Low City turnout see Imps deservedly lose

Just 688 Imps fans made the 45 mile journey to Chesterfield's new B2Net Stadium and they were "rewarded" with watching City's fifth defeat from seven games this season. Mattis and Davies scored either side of half time before Ben Hutchinson pulled one back late on. The defeat leaves City in a familiar situation, battling relegation.-

City started the game reasonably well, with some headers from corners going over the bar before Facey's long range effort went well over the bar. Lester had the host's first chance when he hit a Davies cross over the bar before Danny Whittaker, fresh from a hatrick in his last home game, shot just wide from 20 yards.

The Imps were now on the back foot and struggling to get out of their own half, although it the hosts weren't exactly creating many chances and the game at this point seemed destined to end 0-0. The returning Carayol, although quite clearly not match fit, shot wide from distance in a rare City attack.

Chesterfield won a 36th minute corner and it was quickly taken. It went to Dean Morgan and he swung in towards Dwayne Mattis, he headed beyond Anyon and into the City net, it was the sixth time in City's seven games this season that the Imps had conceded the first goal. Hughton headed over from 6 yards just before the half time whistle.

The second half started with a moment of controversy as Davies burst into the area before being brought down from behind by Pearce. Despite clearly being in the area, the referee only gave a free kick, a free kick that was wasted by the hosts. It was a bit of a let off for the Imps as it should have been a penalty. Lester and Talbot quickly wasted chances for the hosts and it appeared as though it might be a long half for the Imps.

Andy Hutchinson came on in place of Delroy Facey but the change did nothing immediate in favour of the Imps, infact quite the opposite as the Imps went 2 down within seconds of the substitution. Lester played the ball through for Davies, whom had a free run on goal as he tapped beyond Anyon to make it two-nil and seal the victory for the hosts with half an hour left.

Hughton missed from 12 yards within a minute following the goal before Ian Pearce was lumped up front. Brewery replaced Lester for the hosts before O'Keefe came on for Keltie. Pearce was booked for a hefty challenge before a strange moment that saw Pearce think he was going off for Kerr, but play resumed before the switch could be made and Pearce just stood by Kerr on the touchline for the two minutes it took before the ball went out of play again.

The Imps seemed down and out before an Anderson ball into the box fell to Ben Hutchinson. Despite appearing to blatently push a Chesterfield defender, he was allowed to hammer the ball home after some poor close control. City forced a few corners but none of them came to anything and the Imps had lost 2-1, slipping to 18th in the table.

I'd like to know how you were able to see the Pearce incident so clearly considering you were sat at the back of the stand, behind the goal.

Well I was able to see that the feet of Davies were beyond the white line....that's the good thing about seeing things in three dimensions, I'm able to tell when a person crosses a line from 100odd yards away.

finished work early to drive over to chesterfield,got home and just couldnt be bothered ,thought i might go in the future when we have a team worth watching

i havent read all of it, infact only the first paragraph. but it seems harsh to say we deservedly lost.. but it seems weve seen improvement this season, and from what i saw from bbc, we had something like 16 goal attempts, with 8 on target.. which id say is above average for a game from a team. hutchinson has his first goal, and 700 isnt an awful following taking into account in the last 2 months weve had season ticket sales and new shirts. im not worried at all this season. we certainly seem better than last season imo

hmm, i havent actually been to a home game for a very long time, i wont pay 18 quid to watch league 2 football

688 is probably similar to my first trip there back 1992 when we won 5-1, not sure how many went there on last trip in 2001 but would thought it was around there.
We had a 5 year spell when travelling was much higher than it is has ever been but we are back down now to what we were getting before the playoff years.
I went to away game at Donny in 91 we won 5-1 the total attendance that was less than 2000 and I guess and the away support must of been similar to todays total the week before we beat Scunny 4-2 and the crowd was barely more 3000 I think.
One another note where have Chesterfield suddenly developed 3000 fans from? Have they nicked ours???

i thought it wasnt a bad turn out considering not many people have much of a disposable income anymore.... its not just the gate price, its the transport costs, food, drink etc.... Think some people need to be more realistic about fans travelling to away games....

Just going onto the point about our away followings only going up because of the Playoff years and then dipping again, that's not really the case.

I've never once seen us take more than around 1,000 to Mansfield (in six visits), the only time we took more than 1,000 or so to Scunny was during the Playoff games, I'll ignore the Grimsby game as there's the obvious safety issue with that game, so I'll not go into our followings there. The only ground we took consistently good numbers to in the Playoff years was Boston.

I suppose it depends on what people class as a local derby. For me it's anything you can get to within about an hour and 15 minutes and/or is less than 60 miles away.

we often use to take over 1000 to scunny,never use to take many to mansfield considering how close it was ,although wed always take twice as many to p/boro as for the cods its just a hole why would anyone want to visit that place

mansfields capacity is only around 7,000 though isnt it?id say the obvious and easiest of games to get to is scunny, and again their ground is small. boston is another easy ground to get to until you get to boston of course with its one road in. remember what our fan base is well! at the moment a little over 3k wwith a fifth of that travelling to chesterfield, that isnt bad at all i dont think, even going to chesterfeild takes a big chunk out of your day
