Bloomer rated as fantastic by Cambridge

Matt Bloomer made his debut for Cambridge yesterday and the man on loan from Sincil Bank impressed everyone involved. Bloomer helped his new side to a 1-0 win away at Woking as the U's near enough guaranteed themselves that they wouldn't suffer a 2nd relegation in a year.

Bloomer has played just 13 times for the Imps this season but the majority of those only came from other players being injured and suspended and he hasn't been a regular in the first team since the home game against Wycombe last season, when he had a nightmare and effectively scored Wycombe's 3 goals by himself. He joined Cambridge on loan earlier in the week and United manager, Rob Newman was delighted with his contribution.

"I thought he (Bloomer) was fantastic, he was one of the picks but I don't want to pick one person because I thought that the back 4 were solid as a unit."

Bloomer initially joined the Imps on loan towards the end of the 2001/2 season from Hull and after being released by the Tigers, he joined the Imps permanently in the 2002/3 season and for the vast majority of his career with the Imps, was one of the most consistent performers. However, just like Simon Weaver, when City started bringing in better quality players, Bloomer suddenly found himself falling down the pecking order. His natural right defensive position is currently occupied by Colin Cryan who is first choice for the place, Beevers is cover for him and even Gareth McAuley would be moved over before Bloomer is considered.

Bloomer has been a fantastic servant for the Imps in the past 4 years but it looks as though his time with the Imps is well and truly over, but if he continues to do what he's doing at Cambridge, he'll surely get a deal there.
