Imps to return to Grimsby after Cheltenham win

Lincoln City will be playing Grimsby Town again next season after the Mariners lost in the playoff final to Cheltenham. It was the first time that Grimsby had lost a playoff match and thanks to a Steve Guinan effort just after the hour, they are set for another year in League 2.

The Mariners were less than a minute away from automatic promotion before Northampton equalised in the final game of the season. They have also joined Wycombe as a team that spent the vast majority of the season in the automatic promotion places to not win promotion and with several of their bigger stars set to leave, they might not be as high up the table as last time. However, the news that the Imps will be playing Grimsby again next season might not be as good as a lot of Imps' fans think. City have lost 4 times to the Mariners in the last months, 1-0 in a pre-season friendly, a 3-0 defeat at Christmas and the 2 playoff games.

Cheltenham Town however have broke a run of the 4th placed team winning the playoffs, that run lasted 4 years and was ironically started by Cheltenham when they defeated Rushden 3-1 in 2001/2, since then, Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Southend went on to win promotion.
