Leeds 2-0 Southend

A strong start saw Leeds beat Southend 2-0 on a damp Tuesday evening at Elland Road. Over 20,000 turned up to see the match and were rewarded by two goals in the opening 11 minutes as Leeds pushed forward against a defensive Southend. The win lifts Leeds to within 3 points of the play off places and just 6 points from the second Automatic promotion spot although other teams have games in hand.

The win is the third successive victory for new Manager, Simon Grayson and the fans showed their appreciation for his efforts at the club by seeking a wave from the gaffer.  He has picked up 10 points from a possible 15 and clean sheets in two of the last three games.

Rui Marques was on the score sheet for only the fourth time in his career, rising to meet a Bradley Johnson corner on the 6th minute.  It was well deserved as Lees pushed forward from the first minute and the pressure did not let up with Leeds going close again only minutes later.  The pressure paid off again though, another corner but this time it was the turn of the other centre back, on Loan Naylor to meet the ball with his head and it seemed Leeds could be cruising to a massive win.

The early goals though took the sting out of the contest and although Leeds continued to break down Southend, only half hearted chances were created.  Beckford could have had a penalty and also put a shot over in the first half. He also got clean through at one point but played the ball straight at the Southend keeper.  Robinson could have scored but the game was becoming a scrappy affair in midfield - but at least Leeds were doing the scrapping!

All too often, Leeds gave possession back to Southend but they were unable to capitalise except for a few opportunities due to individual errors, one leading to them hitting the post and another forcing a good point blank smother from Casper - but the game drifted on to the conclusion.

In the closing minutes, Becchio who had just replaced Beckford could have made it 3-0 with a good header but the Southend Keeper was well positioned to deal with it.
