Leeds look to next season
By Andy Baggott

Leeds are looking at a big overhaul in the off season, with new boss Brian McDermott targetting 7 players to bolster the squad. He has already cut 10 players, including Paddy Kisnorbo, Leigh Bromby and several youngsers - onloan striker Habib Habibou has also been let go as Leeds chose not to take up the option of a transfer following his loan.
There are several positions that need strengthening - another centre back is a must, as is some creativity in midfield, where I would like to see 2 central midfielders coming in. Mccdermott likes to play with wingers, so I would expect one or even two widemen coming in. Another striker is also a must, to compliment McCormack and Morison.
Much of the transfer policy will depend on young Sam Byram - he's rumoured to be the target of several clubs, with figures between £8 and £10 million banded about. To take the club forward, Leeds need to be keeping hold of the likes of Byram - however, in the real world, an offer of around that amount - potentially with a loan back clause, is likely to be accepted.

Come on Brian, grow some.
Quote:I will be seriously F***ED OFF if Byram goes. Brian needs to sit him down and tell him he owes the club at least another year or two, particularly to the fans who pay outrageous prices to see them play. We need the likes of Byram - there aren't many like him - and if this trend continues we'll NEVER have a strong enough squad.
Come on Brian, grow some.
It won't be Byram seeking a move - it will be a money to good to refuse offer from an EPL club - If we could get £6m-£8m for him, then as a Championship club, without a rich sugar Daddy, we'd need to accept it - we;ve been willing to accept this in the past (ala Delph etc.) with the promise of the money going in to the team - than never materialised.
If Byram goes, then I can accept it if the money goes back to BMc to rebuild the team - we just don't want it to go on a restaurant, bar or Radio Station!
That money would help BMc bring in the players he wants and I am confident GFH will let him have it all.
I dont think it is the best move for Byram though. He needs at least another year at ER for his development. At LUFC he is loved by the fans, highly thought of by the coaches/manager and valued by his teammates. Unlikley to be the case eslewhere.
If he moves to one of the teams rumoured (City, Liverpool, Arsenal) then he may find he will only get a couple of first team games then be loaned out to a Championship side after Jan, which will hinder his progress.
He needs to be learning in a comfortable environment where his mistakes will be forgiven. His defending needs improvement as does his positional sense at the back.
For me if we get that and Brian Mc gets a minimum 5/6m to spend i'll be happy with that beacuse that would be ample to bring enough quality and depth into the squad for a genuine promotion push.
Now before anyone kicks off the club and team are bigger than any one player and EVERY club in world football is a "selling club" it hurts when they are your best and homegrown but if we sell and spend the money on the team and go up or at least make the top 6 it will be worth it.
I also agree re no one player is bigger than the club. Most teams in this division could get promoted on £6m if the money was spent adequately, ie, if Neil Warnock wasn't in charge of going after players.

I have it on good authority that LUFC will refuse to answer any calls re-Byram unless they start with a Guaranteed 8m.

With you on that.
Also being dispassionate for a monent, if we hang onto him for another year and he gets a bad injury for example, we may get f-ook all. At the moment he is nearly fully fit,or at least where his value is not affected,so cashing in now would make sense.
I would love him to stay and be part of a bright LUFC future but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Buy and loan back to us for season or is that not allowed ?
Yeah its allowed, S.cum bought Zaha and loaned him back to Palace for the season
It's good to know that we'll at least hold out for a strong bid and not be held to ransom!

Seriously hope they're right Rhino. Increasingly worried about just what GFH Capital are all about. Their dodgy website being the basis of my concerns then the financial reports that are getting published (and talked about in the thread from the other day). Not to mention how Haigh and Patel seem intent on shrouding their (business) plan for the club. Definitely need more transparency that I hope McDermott will help establish as he has hinted.

However i would hope we LUFC would impress strongly to Sam that we dont want to sell him and that moving to a top flight club may not improve him as a player, and use the examples of beckford & delph as senarios.
FD was the be all and end when at leeds and the future looked bright (bang a move to an average side in the PL and what has he done since?) very little improvement, dosent stand out on the pitch anymore so for me Delph is the perfect example of how player development is affected by moving to another Club.
Now all the talk is Sam is being looked at by "bigger" Clubs so its almost certain he would be loaned back to a championship side anyway.

They have bought the club, sold a small amount to another investment bank, given a small amount of equity to current directors..wooo woo what now?......
The only positive thing they have done in the progress of the footballing side of the club is to appoint Brian McDermott as manager, I only hope they are not doing a Bates and filling him with empty promises and excuses why we cant buy players of the standard needed for a promotion push......

LEEDS UNITED INTERNATIONALLY
FAMOUS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
I've said it and i stand by it LUFC wont entertain any talks or approaches that aren't within the asking price which is 8M!!
This has come from within the club mate i don't make things up and apparently it's out there amongst the interested partys that its 8m.

It's still a red herring,as no club will play £8m for Byram. Personally I'm glad as I don't want us to sell him.

No but it makes it EASIER TO READ!..ok fair enough bud..just saying i don't think he'll attract offers of any where near 8 million (no matter what the club values him at)
The club seem very resolute and determined in their stance and now he's set to be an England u20 player his value will only go up imo.

Dunno why people think he wouldn't commnd that sort of money.....far worse players have gone for more....8 mill to some clubs is pocket money these days....anyway hopefully a high price tag will put most off anyway. Would personally like to see him stay.
Not many championship player have gone for £8m, especially right backs. If you can name a championship right back who went for £8m I'll be impressed, though somehow I doubt you will.
I have always said build a team around 3/4 youngsters without selling them for a few years but I don't think GFH have enough cash to get us to the Premier.
Sam's cash would pay for Matt Mills, Mad Max and Beckford with Peltier stepping into his rightful position of RB....nobody could say that is not an improvement on last season.
Getting rid of another 4/5 deadwood off the wage bill could fund another 2/3 prudent freebies for a good squad without spending any money in theory....
BYRAM OUT....ALL PLAYERS HAVE A S-HIT 2nd SEASON ANYWAY

Look at where Bale started as a ropey LB!!!
Byram has the talent to easily slot into RM and then maybe CM as he gets older and more experience Football has 1000's of examples of young players starting in 1 position but moving to another 1 as they get older and develop into better players.
Also IF Zaha is worth 15m and Ince the same or more then Byram is worth 8m all day long.
Also Papa its not 8m for a RB its 8m for a very very good young player who's just had a cracking 1st season and has just made it into the u20 England squad.
These situations are where you also pay for the potential when buying youngsters.
Here's a list of the top championship transfers, unless you're a striker you won't get big money. And it's only experienced defenders that clubs shed out cash, not those with only one year on their cv. Kyle Walker went for £5.2, Greg Halford £4m, Luke Young £3.3m, John Stones £3.1m.

There's also now an issue of cash liquidity. Outside the top 4-6 clubs, very few have much money to splash about.
i'd definitely like to see him there for
us but if the moneys right he'll go.
Byram, Lees, Pearce, White
Thompson, N.Turner L.Turner
Dawson
McCormack, Peleon

Pending the amount of money we have to spend could see a Leeds united side filled with youth. Imagine we see in the preseason the following line up...
Kenny
Byram, Lees, Pearce, White
Thompson, N.Turner L.Turner
Dawson
McCormack, Peleon
I quite like the look of that team. Cairns, Killock and Mowatt on the subs bench.

That team would be cannon fodder in the Championship, relegated by a distance.
Quote:Have you watched them play? I think you're talking @#$%&. Byram and Lee's and McCormack have been our best players over the past couple of years whereas you just want to to sign journeyman. Who was the last championship signing to do a damned thing for us? The only decent players we've had have been the youth team and signings from the lower leagues,so show them some respect, why don't you.snowywhite69Quote:PapaSmurfQuote:Daniel2

The CM 3 would definately get over-run and Dawson still has plenty to learn and growing to do.
If your going to intorduce that many youngsters at once it needs to be a cup game against League 1/2 opposition.
Not only that one of the Turners is more of a RB than a CM and as much as i'd like to see Thompson starting in the CM he needs experience along side him.
Also back to yer transfers of yester-year from this League what about Zaha and posssibly Ince??
Byram is easily worth well over 5M and he wont go for anything less and that's ignoring the opening negotiation price firmly quoted by the Club.

Cheers Rhino, you've done a lot of my work for me there!
Papa - yes I certainly have seen them play, have you? I asked you a couple of times recently on a different thread if you'd ever seen Killock play for one, and you failed to answer.
Who says I want us to sign journeymen? I want us to sign better quality. Just because a player may be young and eager, it doesn't necessarily make him good enough. And as I stated recently, if we go in to the new season with the central-defensive pairing of Lees and Pearce we may as well forget promotion now.
We need a mixture of young players who are ready, such as Byram, and some experience too if we are going to be contenders next season.
On a side-note Papa, what did you say when Wilko signed the likes of Varadi, Shutt, McClelland etc? I bet you weren't too happy!
Oh and for the record - I think you're talking &*$% if you want to be like that! This isn't Football Manager!

Don't we have scouts round Leeds where we can 'bully' teams like Barnsley and poach their best players before other clubs get in?
It's like a food chain where teams like Citeh, Everton and Chelscum 'bully' us into selling our best youth....
Surely we can do the same....

McDERMOTT IN!!!!

Sam put Zaha in his back pocket twice this season????
Don't know if you were at the palace game at ER this year, but my memory of that game is that Zaha played very well, byram played ok also but remember being very very impressed with Zaha, he certainly wasn't in byram's back pocket. Leeds won 2-1 but we were extremely fortunate to win that game. To be fair though to win any game under Borenock we needed to be lucky.
That's the reality. Stop looking for heroes.

Could not agree more Rhino/Snowy et al.
I find it incredible that having just watched essentially that defence finish mid-table (could have been in bottom 5 quite easily) people are advocating playing the same bloody players supported by an unproven lightweight array of youngsters
.
Dawson had a very decent hour in the first X1 - but he is woefully short of muscle and was knocked off the ball as quickly as he tired once his young legs went. Understandably so.
I think "canno-fodder" is putting it mildly personally.
All about opinions, mind.
