Former Millwall Boss Mick McCarthy is set to get back into League management and reports suggest that he will be installed as the new Sunderland boss tommorow.

Former Millwall Boss Mick McCarthy is set to get back into League management and reports suggest that he will be installed as the new Sunderland boss tommorow.

With the news last night of the sackings off Howard Wilkinson and Steve Cotterill who had only 27 games in charge at The Stadium Of Light, McCarthy was installed as favourite to take over.

McCarthy last league posting was at Millwall were he enjoyed six good years at the South London club, before taking over from Jack Charlton in 1996 for the Irish National job , McCarthy as good as a manager he is never took Ireland to a major championship failing in play-offs for places in the 1998 World Cup finals and for Euro 2000 , he then had a bust up with Roy Keane in the last World cup and quit just after Ireland's exit.

McCarthy if and when installed will take Ian Evans his Ireland number two and Naill Quinn in a coaching role.

Sunderland chairman Bob Murray said "The club and its supporters have suffered disappointment over a drawn-out period."

"We will be appointing a successor before our crucial home game with Bolton Wanderers at the weekend."
