The Kings of Sexy Football - A Real Assist to an Assist

Who buys a replica shirt and prints "The Kings of Sexy Football" on it? They are either mad or have a lot of confidence in this Arsenal team. Well the answer is a tall black guy coming out of the ground after Arsenal's 4-1 drubbing of AZ. And his shirt sums up what there is to be said about Arsenal at the moment.

Have you ever seen football played like that? Yes I know it was only the champions of Holland, but remember how Koeman teams can frustrate and bore. Indeed the press were having great fun trying to wind up Wenger, taunting him that he has never beat a Koeman team. Interesting how the press now try and create the news, they play mind games with managers so as to create shock results.

 

Nonetheless, Arsenal at home are a formidable team with over 30 goals scored and only 6 against. Those are pretty sexy statistics, but what about the actual play itself? Last night was spectacular, Arshavin had three assists and he measures them with slide rule accuracy. His pass to Nasri was immaculate it was like a snooker ball rolling carefully over green velvet, arriving at its destination devoid of spin ready to be pocketed.

Assist to Assister Award

Meanwhile there should be a new assist to the assist award. Do you remember when Hleb's mind was obsessed with ice cream and he was running round in circles with only three assists all season? Well some genius at Arsenal discovered that the bloke was not a complete waste of time. Oh no, he was the number one assister to assists. We ignorant fans had missed out on his real contribution.

I suppose my memory is selective as I cannot remember one of his assists to an assister. Who needs Dribbly McNoscore (apologies to Arseblog) when you have Arshavin and Eduardo. These guys run at goal, not in circles, they shoot, they score, they assist and they assist assisters.

The Curse of the Arsenal Magazine

It would take Hleb 5 years to catch up with them, but I digress, let's get back to the assist to the assister award, or should that be the assister to the assist award. No doubt some genius on the Arsenal Magazine can tell us. Gawd I just hope they don't do a feature on Eddy or Andrev on why they will never leave, that would kybosh it all.

 Back to the award - Eduardo is in the Arsenal half, he is facing the home goal, he receives the ball but does not turn round. Using his leg like a croquet mallet he flicks the ball behind him, a powerful flick that sends the ball rolling 20 or 30 yards into opposition territory and into Arshavin's path. All Arshavin has to do is follow the momentum of the ball and cross to Diaby. Its Eduardo's assist that has split and nullified the AZ defence. It is a thing of beauty, it is audacious there should be an award for such play. Did I mention there should be an assist to the assister award, or should that be the assister to the assist award? I will never forget it.

The Glory Game

Are you Tottenham in disguise roared the crowd, and then the ole's started so Arsenal went looking for a 5^th. So obsessed with the beautiful game they forgot about the defence, but who cares?  As Danny Blanchflower used to say, "The game is about Glory. It is about doing things in style with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom".  Poor Danny I bet he was turning in his grave on Saturday.
