5 star Arsenal hammer Sunderland - Ratings

By Gunnersingh
December 21 2021

On to the semi final which could apparently be 1 game instead of the normal 2. Pepe shades Eddie for MotM

Leno 6 - Not much to do.

Cedric - 6 Good pass to Pepe for his goal but got caught upfield far to open and struggled 1 v 1

White 3 - Terrible defending for their goal  and took an age on the ball and lost it various times.  The new Mustafi. 1 mistake every game.

Holding 7 - Played well, especially with his lack of game time

Tavares 8 - Brilliant crosses and assist for Neketiah 2nd. Best crosser at the club.

Eleney  2 - He was awful.  Lack of pace and skill and juat continued to pass backwards.  Needs to be moved on ASAP.

Pepe 9 - MOTM.  Goal, assists, skill and creativity.  Yes it was against a low level of team but he was a joy to watch.

Odegarrd 8 - Quiet first half but turned it in 2nd half.  Showed why he's ahead of Smith Rowe currently.

Smith Rowe 6 - Not at his best.  Has to improve his fitness as he gets tired too quickly.

Balogun 5 - Missed opputunity.  He's not a winger though.

Neketiah 9 - Just misses out as MOTM.  Great finishes for his 2nd and 3rd.  Hopefully he can do that in the prem.

Subs
Xhaka 7 - Made a difference and the game went through him when he come on. Good pass to Pepe for Patinho goal.

Martinelli 6 - Come on and almost got injured a few times. Needless to bring him on.

Patinho 8 - Very happy for him. Great moment for him and his family. Timed his run for the goal brilliantly and reminds a lot of people of Wilshere.

Gabriel 5 - Few sloppy passes.

Leno 6 - Could have probably done better for the goal

Cedric - 7- Just for being good going forward. Poor defensive back up if we get injuries.

White 3 - Not his best game.

Holding 7 - Did ok. Decent Back up player.

Tavares 5 - Does good thing's but a lot of bad thing's as well. Very sloppy at times.

Eleney 2 - He gets worse.

Pepe 8 - Got better as game went on. This is his level. Could have done a lot better for their goal.

Odegarrd 7 - Was he playing 1st half ? Improved a lot 2nd half.

Smith Rowe 6 - Poor.

Balogun 5 - Had no effect. Not good enough for Prem.

Neketiah 9 - MOTM. This is level and will do well at it. Not a prem striker.

Subs
Xhaka 7 - Did his job.

Martinelli 6 - He's going to end up getting hurt the way he plays.

Patinho 7 - Big night for the lad and capped it with a goal. (has he got big ears)

Gabriel 5 - Few sloppy passes.

We will definitely need a top striker for the prem either Jan or the summer.

I thought Leno was awful on the goal, yes it was a bad defensive error but he was like a rabbit in headlights as the scorer approached. He had no ideas of what to do

The goal was Ben White fault. No good defender let's that ball get behind him. He should have cut that out. with ease it was schoolboy defending and that's being kind.

The only pass that should have been allowed was across him and then he would have had a 1 v 1 against their striker and their striker would still have had to beat Leno if he beat him.

Ben White is making far too many mistakes. He makes at least 1 big mistake every game. Hopefully Saliba is given the chance as he's a far better defender.

So, so happy for Patino. What a moment.

I was disappointed to see White, and both Odegaard and ESR all starting, plus Gabriel coming off the bench. Didn't think it was necessary personally. Would've liked to have seen Rekik off the bench as well. Arteta is cautious though. Good night overall.

Nketiah is a weird one. I've always said that when you saw him for our U23s or England U21s you could see there were more levels to his game than what he showed with us last season, but I doubted whether we'd be able to give him the time and space needed to grow. He certainly looks improved this season. His contract is up at the end of this season, and although Arteta does seem keen to keep him, I wouldn't blame Eddie for wanting the freedom of being a free agent to get him a better wage at a mid-table club...

I'm still confident Balogun has what it takes to join our other academy graduates in the first team squad, he just needs that run of games to grow. January loan like ESR's to Huddersfield needed. Hope it happens.

An 8 for Tavares? I thought he was average at best. Itโ€™s interesting how people see games differently

Maitland-Niles must have been gutted to be ill (non-Covid) and miss a big opportunity last night to show what he can do. He won't get many chances.

Some rumours that they make the Carabao Cup semi-finals one leg instead of two. Hope we avoid Liverpool or Chelsea in the draw later

The new Mustafi

I think its a bit harsh to be labeling White as the new Mustafi at this early stage of his career with us. If we are looking to draw parallels between players we need to look at a larger sample size, rather than simply picking on individual errors in games and saying White is suddenly on a par with one of the worst defenders we've seen at the club.

If we remember, Mustafi actually had quite a good start to his career with us until the errors began to creep into his game to the point where we wanted to replace him with Johnny Evans after one season. Conversely, Koscielny probably our best CB of the 2010's time with us started off shaky, diving in, getting bullied and getting sent off twice within his first four months at the club, until he began to iron out those errors and read the game more effectively.

We dont know yet were White will fall on the Koscielny- Mustafi spectrum, probably somewhere in the middle, he may very well be eclipsed by Gabriel, who lets not forget had some ropey times with us last season as well post covid. The transfer fee weighs heavy, but that's not his responsibility, so lets not condemn the lad to Mustafi banter reel before giving him the season to assess where his career might go with us.

Sunderland were capable of being rough, needed a few wizzened pros out there, and also some experience to hold the team together. ESR hasnt had a start for a few games so he needed it if he is not just going to be super sub.

It was refreshing to see a player make a forward pass and not just take easy route and play back to the CB like Tierney does every game!

They were physical against players like Pepe and Martinelli last night. I thought the ref was quick to snuff those out with a few yellows.

Sensible and mature analysis of the White situation with facts and no hyperbole. Well done! (Sm152)

With a CB you can't ignore mistakes and juat say it's ok because his comfortable with the ball. Sorry but he's making mistakes every week that are costing us goals.

Like I said before he arrived he hasn't got the attributes to be a top player and he's actually very lucky that he has Tomi alongside him to help him out, as he has bailed him out a lot

I've hammered Mustafi and Holding for errors so why shouldn't i do the same with White?

The same people defending White are bashing Xhaka which is very ironic!

The one for Nketiah was great. I remember him losing the ball several times and us getting hit on the counter.

I like him a lot. Nice to see youโ€™ve changed your mind on some of our summer signings after writing them off before theyโ€™d kicked a ball

Yes hopefully I can on White as well but at the minute am not seeing it.

We all get things wrong. I seem to remember you writing off Martinelli as well mate.

I did, I actually tried to find that post the other day but the search facility isn't working.

If Martinelli keeps playing like this I'm all in. He's pacing himself much better and not running around like a lunatic. He looks a bit bigger as well.

If Saliba has anything about him and Arteta gives him a chance he'll have White out of the team. I don't know if anyone has been watching but he's generally very good but is really loose with the ball on occasions.

Pepe absolutely destroyed them. We all know Pepe has ability. It's just is his decision making is off. If Saka's injured or rested there should be no reason not to play Pepe.

I liked Pepe, but 95% of his good games are against markedly inferior opposition
