What a Transfer Window ! The best transfer window yet ?

By DJArse
September 2 2022

The transfer window which seemed to drag on for ever in the joint hottest summer ever has finally come to an end. How was it for you? Do you think its a good one? Regular AT correspondent DJarse believes its the best ever and lays out his reasons below.

What a Transfer Window ! The best transfer window yet ?

OUT permanently went Lacazette, Mavropanos, Guendouzi, Leno, Torreira, + Bellerin (seems very likely but still to be confirmed)

OUT on loan and very unlikely to return: Mari, Pepe, Maitland-Niles, Runarsson

OUT on loan but likely to return: Okonkwo (3 clean sheets so far with Crewe), Balogun (2 goals for Reims so far) & Tavares (3 goals for Marseille so far)

Virtually all the remaining deadwood at the club has now effectively been removed (including from the huge clear-outs in the last 2 windows). There are very few left at the club whose future participation is not universally welcomed. The only possible exceptions being:

* Nelson: perhaps he would have gone too if not for his injury – probably he will be given a chance when he recovers and if he doesn’t take it will be shipped out in January.

* Cedric: he will probably be a stop-gap option for this season before Norton-Cuffy slots in next season as back-up to Tomiyasu.

* Elneny: will probably be released at the end of this season and replaced by an upgrade.

* Xhaka - has been in great form this year but may be allowed to leave at the end of the season if Luiz and Lokonga impress this season.

Everyone else in the squad now is seen as part of the medium/long-term project.

IN came: Turner, Vieira, Marquinhos, Jesus, Zinchenko + Luiz (seems likely but still to be confirmed)

There is still clearly a glaring gap for a winger. But it seems reasonable given the unexpected injuries to Elneny & Partey that attention at the last minute had to be switched to getting midfield cover. And we do have Marquinhos and Nelson as wingers - not ideal I admit, but may be ok for now till the World Cup - and we could get Mudryk in the New Year window (Shakhtar were loathe to release him until then.

We now have an incredibly youthful squad – average age of 24.2 years.

Ramsdale

(Turner & Hein)

Tomiyasu Saliba Gabriel Zinchenko
(Cedric White Holding Tierney)

Odegaard Partey Xhaka
(Vieira Lokonga/Luiz Elneny)

Saka Jesus Martinelli
(Marquinhos Nketiah Smith-Rowe)

And we probably have Norton-Cuffy, Trusty, Patino, Flores and other Academy starlets to come back next season as well as Okonkwo, Tavares, Balogun (already mentioned).

Most of our squad are only going to improve. I think the future looks bright.

Started ok.

But ended terrible.
We haven't learnt from past mistakes once again.

Has more or less blown any chance if we had a chance of top 4.

Our squad is to thin.
We can't manage Premier and European football.

Our top players will be burnt out soon.

You might be right Boston, but I assume most first team regulars wont play all the group games. It will take some juggling.

The 2022 World Cup is the shortest ever and will run from November 21, 2022, to December 18, 2022.
The first EPL game after WC2022 is on 26 Dec 2022.

After Round #8 on 17 Oct, there is an international break, with EPL resumes on 1 Oct.
Round #17 is played on 12 Nov before WC2022 break.

After playing this weekend 4-Sep Round #6, there are only 11 EPL weekend games within 2 months from 11 Sep to 12 Nov.

Mid-week games are reserved for European Football and League Cup games.

5 substitutes are a godsend to rotate our senior players and we got a decent UEL draw which means our Reserves will play substantially in UEL, allowing more rest for senior players.

We read too much into Partey being a key player that will derail our season if he is not available.

In fact, a successful is very much dependable on the tactical acumen and team formation by Mikel Arteta to vary against different opponents.

This is the squad assembled by Mikel Arteta and so far, had not led him down.

Michael Jordan: "Individuals win games but team wins championship".

@#$%& window. A team that needed 6 players got 3 but only 2 have played and got lucky having a player come back that has been registered with the club for 3 seasons.
There's no need to brag about 10 players gone if you're only getting around 10mil back, as usual Arsenal are 2 players short.
Our last signing was Zinchenko on the 23rd of July there was a whole month to work on at least one more player.

Arsenal 22/23 G.Jesus, Nketiah, Martinelli, Saka, ESR and Vieira.

22/23 - 4-3-3 Formation with 3 selected out of 6 designated forward players.

ESR is better as an inside forward rather than no.10.

If both Jesus and Nketiah are out, Arteta can always emulate Spain 2012 Euro team using 4-6-0 with Odegaard or Vieira as the deep lying forward like Fabregas.

We will know what Vieira is made of during this weekend or against FC Zurich.

Lucky we bought a player who went out on loan?

Guendouzi went, that was ยฃ10m. The Torreira deal shouldโ€™ve been ยฃ12m but Fiorentina tried to low ball us. Guess what, we grew a pair and told them to do one.

We shouldโ€™ve got one more but we didnโ€™t. That doesnโ€™t mean our season is about to fall apart

4 first teamers plus Elneny.

I'm confused about praising this club for getting rid of players. We've paid off players, cancelled contracts, let players run down their contracts, not registered ozil/sokratis in our Premier League squad before and new level unlocked 0 fee.

Impress us by getting 40 mil for Pepe, 20mil for AMN, 20 mil for R Nelson, 10 mil for Elneny, 20m for Cedric. These lot will all go and we'll be lucky to get 35mil and it'll be seen as a great achievement to get rid of deadwood.

I compare where we were last year to where we are now. Last year bottom of the league after 3 straight defeats and the squad still full of under-performing overpaid players that Arteta / Edu inherited. This year top of the league after 5 straight wins and virtually all the deadwood got rid of. We all said it would take 2 / 3 years to sort the squad out and it has now been done. It's an incredible turn-round. And a vital and time-consuming job. We now have a good squad and the youngest in the league full of eager committed young talent.

I am as disappointed as everyone else about us not getting a midfielder or a winger yesterday. But first we weren't able to get much income from the players leaving (not our fault, no one really wanted them) and we were, as reported up against the FFP rules. We got Jesus and Zinchenko for ยฃ70m which is a bargain. And we got most of our business done early but needed to get rid of players first before filling the other gaps. In the end we only had cash for one more player and had to switch from targeting a winger to a holding midfielder after Elneny's injury was identified. That left us just two days to find the right person at the right price. In the old days we would have panicked and bought the wrong person at the wrong price. I'm glad we didn't cough up ยฃ40m for Luiz. ยฃ25m was probably too much given he only had a year left on his contract.

Overall I think the last few windows have been really good. Most pundits say the same. We shouldn't let yesterday's disappointment disguise that.

Compare us at the end of the season not where we are now.
I've a feeling we'll finish lower than last season.

And I really couldn't give a damn about the last few windows.
It's the one just finished that will be talked about again for not making signings and leaving us short upfront and midfield.
More games , smaller squad and less experienced.

Terrible by Arteta and Edu.

If we win our next 3 (united, Everton home, brentford away) it wont feel so bad. I'd say very risky but manageable. Horrorshow would have been signing someone like Scamaca instead of Jesus.

Partey and Zinchenko better be back after these three, because then it gets really though.

And we are all hoping and praying that Sambi can hold the middle and not fall victim to his youthful inexperience or injury.

AND โ€ฆ we had better be cross-training Sambiโ€™s back-up, whomever it is.
Hope it is not Xhaka.
Hope that White gets a look at CDM.

Problem is, no player offers what Partey does. His composure, passing, awareness etc. Watching Tielemans against Utd, his game is so limited.

I hoped Zinchenko could fill in for Partey, but he's out too.

I expect Lokonga to go the way of Alex Song. When he comes good he'll be really good. But we have to wait.

If Lokonga plays well tomorrow, it would do a lot for his confidence.

The only thing I find a little disappointing is we were clearly in for Martinez and Raphinha for. about ยฃ50m each. We signed Zinchenko so there could be ยฃ65m left depending on how those deals were structured.

You might be right Boston, but I assume most first team regulars wont play all the group games. It will take some juggling.

With what we have left they will be very weak European teams.
Slip up early in group game and where in trouble if we have to field strong teams in remaining games.

We had AMN, Pepe, Elneny etc for them sort of games.
Dare we risk Nketiah ๐Ÿค”

Have faith, oh Doubting Thomas.
What's happened to old dumbfcuk?

Still a dumbfcuk if he failed to beat ManU this weekend. grinning smiley

Seriously, he has to atone himself this season for letting Top-4 position slipping thru' his fingers due to his naivety and inexperience last season.

ManU is still in transition, with Ronaldo (Like Auba last season) still a divisive figure to teamwork and is for the taking against a high-flying Arsenal now.
Only a 2021/22 dumbfcuk of a coach will lose to ManU tomorrow.

Why are people obsessed with converting centre backs to central midfielders?

In case of emergency, like:

#1 - Partey out
#2 - Elneny out
#3 - Lokonga out
#4 - Xhaka replaces Odegaard who is out injured.
#5 - White as emergency DCM

In terms of planning, identifying and securing players compatible with what the manager wants I'd give us a 7/10. We were shopping in a different talent bracket this summer, as opposed to last, the more finished talented product, so we facing competition for the players we wanted, Martinez and Raphinha for instance. We were also doing so without the lure of CL football.

We also had a backup plan for Martinez in Zinchenko so that has to be commended as well. Where we loose marks here is the wait and see approach to RW, waiting to see what might go our way price wise as the window ticked closer to shutting, only for that approach to be shelved once DM became an issue.

In terms of reacting to an evolving situation I'd probably give us a 3/10. Only reason for a score here is not getting done for crazy money by Villa for Luiz, but we should have had a plan b here too, even at that late hour a loan of some description could have sufficed even if he only ever played in the cups.

Iam sure Liverpool weren't overly enthused about signing Arthur, given their approach to business, and the hefty enough loan fee and his high wages ,but they did it all the same based on their experiences in the past of being exposed in certain positions.
