Last night's fare in the cauldron of the Vicente Calderon stadium was tame to say least and I think its fair to say, Chelsea headed to Espana, quite prepared to eek out a 0-0 draw. But once Aguero came on and gave Atletico the lead with a sensational volley, ably assisted by JTs head to set him up, the remaining quarter of the game was simply outstanding.
Didier, returning from suspension after last season's antics against Barcelona (the less said......) equalised with eight minutes remaining with a towering header from a Malouda cross and then with two minutes remaning, Dids gave Chelsea the lead after breaking through the heart of Atletico's defence.
It wasn't all over as one would have thought. Up stepped Aguero once again to unleash a wicked free-kick past the stranded Cech.
One note of criticism about Cech. What was the point of diving if you are going to pull your arm away?
There must have been something in the water at Cobham this week as both Czech 'keepers - Sebek and Cech have had confidence issues.
They have not looked commanding as their size and build should suggest. Sebek had a nightmare for the reserves on Monday night as Chelsea crashed 3-2 against Stoke City.
After matchday three, I wrote that I wasn't impressed with Aguero's contribution at The Bridge. After last night's performance I wonder if Mr A will get his chequebook out in January (subject to the transfer ban being suspended).
Dids was a little perplexed speaking after the game.
He said, "It is really frustrating when you concede a goal like this at the end after all the effort we produced, but it was a good game.
"I think we could have done better with the wall and maybe could have avoided the free-kick as well.
"Madrid had also to win and they gave everything and even when they scored the first goal, they kept pushing. We then played better and scored two goals but it was not enough."
Still a last sixteen place has been secured and now we can start to look forward to the visit of the Champions on Sunday.
