Tranmere Rovers will go into the first round draw of the Carling Cup unseeded

Article Header - Breaking News

Tranmere's hopes of going on a run in the Carling Cup have been dealt a blow, as they will go into the first round draw for the competition unseeded due to their lowly league finish last season.

Rovers are one of 35 teams who will go into the draw unseeded, with every side from Brighton and Hove Albion down in League One, and all the teams in League Two unseeded for the draw, which takes place on Wednesday morning.

The result of this means that Tranmere can played one of 15 teams in the northern section of the first round draw, all teams from the Championship or who finished above them in League One last season.

These teams are:

Nottingham Forest
Leicester City
Sheffield United
Middlesbrough
Doncaster Rovers
Derby County
Preston North End
Barnsley
Coventry City
Scunthorpe United
Leeds United
Sheffield Wednesday
Peterborough United
Huddersfield Town
Walsall

Last season, Tranmere were seeded for the competition as they finished seventh in the 2008/09 season, which resulted in them being drawn against Grimsby Town in the first round of the competition, a match they won 4-0, with John Barnes' side going out of the competition in the second round two weeks later after a 1-0 home defeat to Bolton.

Despite being unseeded for the draw, Rovers can play home or away in the first round, with Rovers being drawn away from home four times in the last five years in the first round draw.

Tranmere's best run in the League Cup came in the 1999/2000 season, when John Aldridge famously and unforgetably led the Prenton Park side to the final at Wembley Stadium, with Rovers eventually losing 2-1 to Leicester City.

Total Tranmere will bring you news of the Carling Cup draw as soon as it happens on Wednesday.

We could face a very tough draw then! Really want to avoid going somewhere like Leicester or Nottingham Forest if we can!

Who does everybody want?

I wouldn't mind an away trip to somewhere like Sheffield United

I think anything other than walsall at home and we're out, but any of those teams at home and we'll see a good cup game :-)
