Tranmere Rovers handed an away tie in League Cup first round draw

Tranmere Rovers will travel to Walsall for the first round of the Carling Cup following the draw at League Cup head quarters this morning.

Rovers went into the draw unseeded, following their lowly league finish last season, and will be glad to have been handed a League One side in the draw.

This game against Walsall is however the fifth away draw in six years in the first round of the League Cup, a trophy Rovers reached the final in during the 1999/2000 season before losing 2-1 to Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.

The game will take place at the Bescott Stadium in the week commencing August 9th, and is likely to be on Tuesday August 10th, just three days after the start of the new season.

Elsewhere in the draw, Hartlepool United host Sheffield United, Leicester City host Macclesfield Town and Leeds United host Lincoln, whilst in the Southern section of the draw, Portsmouth will travel to Stevenage, Southampton will host Bournemouth in a south coast derby and Yeovil host Crystal Palace.

Not an ideal draw by any means. Could have been a lot tougher though

Glad it's somewhere I've been before and will go again in the League cos I'm away for this game!
