Tranmere Rovers first team coach Wayne Allison has today left the club, after Rovers Chairman Peter Johnson decided the club couldn’t afford to have two coaches on the clubs pay roll.
Allison, who is affectionately known as “The Chief”, revealed the news on his blog, http://www.mysportsthoughts.com/index.php/2010/06/21/wayne-allison-another-door-closes/ today, where he stated his disappointment to be leaving the club.
Allison wrote “Things have dragged on and the uncertainty of who would be in charge and whether all three of us would still be here has been hard but we have all just carried on as normal but the Chairman has decided that there’s only funding for one coach so it’s me that’s left”.
The former Tranmere, Huddersfield, Halifax and Chesterfield striker then went on to state how much he enjoyed his time as a coach with the club and how he hoped his experience gained whilst at Tranmere would be to the benefit of his future coaching aspirations.
Allison re-joined Tranmere in a coach in October following the departure of John Barnes, as he offered to help caretaker manager Les Parry who was trying to save the club.
When Parry was given the job full time, Allison too was given a contract to stay at the club as a coach until the end of the season.
With Tranmere staying up on the final day of the season, thanks to a 3-0 win over Stockport County, Allison was expected to be retained as a first team coach, with Parry also expected to be retained as manager.
However, it appears the clubs finances are worse than many believed, with Tranmere not able to afford to have Allison on their wage bill any longer.
Total Tranmere would like to thank The Chief, who also served Tranmere well as a player between 1999 and 2002, for his efforts as a coach for the club, and wish him all the best for the future.

Very sad to see him go but it shows how bad our finances really are.
I cant imagine him being on a very high wage at all and if we cant even afford that then how are we going to afford to replace the likes of Curran, Edds and Shuker etc
After the elation of hearing that Welsh will be staying with us, I have come straight back down to earth over this news.
Im starting to think that a long, long season awaits us!

I don't think it's understandable at all. Parry, Garnett and Allison were a coaching team. Between them they handled everything; Parry did the set pieces, team selection and man management, The Chief and Garno did all the coaching. We've lost 50% of that coaching work now, I'm not sure Garno can do it all with no input from Parry. You could, controversially, question now whether all of the coaching team should be disbanded and a new man brought in.

Perhaps that may be for the best in the long run to just bring someone fresh in?
We clearly have no money to justify it. It's a kick in the teeth for Chief after all he did for sure but to let sentiment get in the way wouldn't be the answer either.

Following the way they kept us up, the three should all have been kept on, in my book. He won't have been on a big wage, there would have been place to keep him, even if it ment having one less player, it's more important to have two coaches. What professional club has one coach? It's shambolic and to lose somebody at such a crucial time highlights everything that's wrong with the clubs management

i dont know what truth is in this, but i heard a lot of rumours last season that Allison was working free of charge in order to gain his certificates etc... If that was the case and now he's an extra wage i can see why he's been let go.

We can only speculate on that I suppose Buster.
My original post may have sounded heartless but the Club has bigger problems than a lot of people realise.
There's the arguement that this could now worsen if the Club slides on the back of this decision but it's a lose-lose situation in some senses.

I'm sure £25,000-£30,000 a year for Wayne's wages would be a lot worse than the money we lose should we go down, which looks very likely with just Les and Shaun on the coaching staff. As I say, that money could have been better spent on a coach than a player.

this sums tranmere up, a complete joke in my honest opinion the whole backroom team played an equal part in us staying up so how you can keep two and release one bemuses me
at this rate where gonna have a small squad and no coaches, can we survive really?

Without knowing the full extent of the financial problems, I still think it's a massive mistake to get rid of someone who has shown passion for and a loyalty to our club that we've seen from few others apart from Parry and Garnett.

Should have got rid of Garnett rather than Allison in my opinion. We need a new owner ASAP.
Absolutely ridiculous that we can't have 2 coaches, how are we supposed to get a physio?
Maybe Goodison could adopt a player/coaching role?

The thing that I couldnt get my head round with the Chief, is why the performance of the likes of Curran and Gornell didnt improve from when he came here. Granted they were played out position a lot but, when they had chances they still fluffed them.
Apparantly Chief is a well respected coach, so I was a little disappointed that Curran and Gornell's performance upfront didnt improve.
Back to the original point, I'm a bit gutted, considering he was part of the management team that kept us up, surely if Les is getting the job then Cheif should be included?
Obviously finances are worse than we all thought!

Don't see why the Chief should have stayed ahead of Garno, SWA. Shaun has been at the club for some time, has much more experience than Wayne and has worked wonders with some of our kids too. Definitely good to keep him. I just can't understand how we can only have two coaches though. It's a joke

I just think that the Chief brings a fresher perspective to things which the club has possibly being lacking in the past few years. I would rather we had both coaches anyway, perhaps we should set up a "chief" aid to get him back on board. I wouldn't put the performances of Curran at the Chief's door, he was awful before he came and ruined during his season of 40 substitute apperances.

The club will be selling off it's assets while the playing squad gets smaller and poorer!
We NEED investment! We need someone who can steer the club improving the whole club!
The infrastructure of our facilities is another joke!
Where is the 'state of the art training complex'
Instead the club has been improving the class rooms and dance studio in the old bowls place that the kids use for winter training.
Where is the improvements that have been talked about for so long!
If you walked into the ground 11 years ago, you would still find the same old Prenton Park.
The staffing issues are to be solved because not only do we need a new Physio (thats if Les accepts the job) but also a Youth coach. As kenny Shiels doubled up last year. (he also did the Ressies on more than one occasion) Will shaun be doing the Ressies? All this needs sorting. Why did they get rid of The Chief, when we needed a Coach! DOH!
The whole situation is a joke!
I can only see doom and gloom on the horizon, hopefully not!

It's not great news is it. That's the reward for helping keeping this club in the division hey, cheers for nothing PJ.
I'm not sure of his influence on the team but we will see through the course of the season how much of an impact he had. He was without doubt partly responsible for us getting to Wembley in terms of his influence in the dressing room so lets just see.
I wish him luck in whatever he does and where he ends up and hope that he ends up being a good manager/coach and it doesn't come back to bite us on the a***.

I just dont get it, surely he is saving a physio's wage with les being in the main job, so surely there is money for two coaches.. I seem to remember that we used to have a manager, res manager, youth coach and two coaches plus a physio. Now we have half of that? I just dont get it at all....

nice bloke ! served well as a player........ but we don't need him, can't afford him so bye bye ! considering the lack of goals we scored, not sure what his in put was ! too many cooks ! SG and LP are plenty for the job, and we can afford them (just about probably)
fail to understand how many peole don't or wont understand the financial possition we're in, it's a harsh world out there and it's only going to get harsher, so stop crying and accept who and what we are and just support the lads.... god knows what some of you will be posting in another month or so

I hope he comes back to us when we have the money to be a football league club again.
Vauxhalls and Cammell Laird probably have a bigger wages budget than us.
I do appreciate what PJ did and does - he cannot be expected to put in any more money and our revenue is poor, but are we now any better off than when he took over??
we are now saddled with a massive debt to him, unless he rights that off we will not get any more investment

When is this club going to start looking at the bigger picture. Did Johnson not learn from Chester when they kept Martinez on the bench for 2 seasons, changed manager 4 times and then saw him take Swansea up two divisions and is now a Premier League Manager.
Money is tight, sacrifices sometimes need to be made, but I'm sure there would have been other alternatives.

we all wanted certain players to be offered contracts so they would stay at the Club......... well that costs so something has to make way ! we have no money to spek of ! couldn't afford to get a manager last year ! so I'd prefer we used what funds we have to go on playing staff We are a third tier club ! small squad don't need loads of coaches ! and to be honnest the 'three' last year only saved us from going down in the last game of the season, hardly a winning team ! and a striking coach that couldn't get gaols out ........... how many strikers ! come on !
