Akins Strike Not Enough as Carlisle Take Points

Tranmere were perhaps a little unlucky in the end to lose to Carlisle at home in NPower League One on Tuesday evening after going 2-0 down before half-time but fighting back with a good second half display......

Carlisle made a mockery of Les Parry’s calls for fortress Prenton Park as they left with a 2-1 victory, with Rovers attempts at a second half fight back failing to claw back the early deficit handed on a plate to a nothing more than average visiting side.
United raced into a 2-0 lead before half time but Lucas Akins halved the deficit just after the break but the equaliser never came, and the Cumbrians ensured more that Rovers dropped more home points.
There was just one change to the side that lost at Huddersfield, with Joss Labadie replacing Max Power in midfield meaning Rovers began with the usual 4-5-1 formation as follows:

Raven, Taylor, Goodison, Buchanan
Akins, Labadie, Weir, Welsh, McGurk

With the first meaningful attack of the game Carlisle went ahead. Liam Noble's low centre went right through the Rovers box and Lee Miller poked in at the back post.
Enoch Showunmi had a powerful drive tipped over soon after before McGurk cut inside and tested Adam Collin with a low drive.
Ian Goodison did well to clear the danger after Ash Taylor’s woeful back pass fell short of Owain Fon Williams, however the young centre back wouldn’t be so lucky soon after.
Rory Loy beat Taylor with ease before he was tripped by the Welshman in the area. The referee pointed to the spot and James Berrett scored despite Fon Williams getting a hand to it.
As the half drew to a close, John Welsh was in the right place to head off the line from Murphy’s header, before blocking the re-bound whilst at the other end Showunmi headed wide twice, before Akins headed over as the teams went in for half time.

Six minutes after the break and Rovers were back in the game. Robbie Weir's low drive was kept out by Collins but Lucas Akins reacted first to volley in, making it 1-2.
Showunmi’s excellent overhead kick was easily saved by Collin, before Mustafa Tiryaki replaced Weir as Rovers switched to a 4-4-2 formation.
Joss Labadie then fired over twice in quick succession, through a free kick and a drive from the edge of the box and the same player then tested Collin and had an effort turned behind for a corner.
The visitors were a threat on the counter attack, as Loy and Noble both sent efforts wide, at the other end John Welsh had an effort turned behind by Collin but the equaliser never came, as Rovers lost at home for the first time this season.
