Giant goalkeeper signs new Tranmere contract

Article Header - Breaking News

Tranmere goalkeeper Jason Mooney has signed a new one-year contract at Prenton Park.

The giant shot-stopper, 24, spent the majority of last season playing second fiddle to Rovers No.1 Owain fon Williams after being poached from Wycombe twelve-months ago.

But the Northern Irishman eventually made his debut on the final day of the season against Bournemouth, keeping an impressive clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

And his manager Ronnie Moore was understandably delighted that Mooney has decided to extend his Rovers stay.

"Jason has really progressed over the last 12 months and I’m pleased he will be staying with us," he told the official Tranmere Rovers website.

“He has had to be really patient and watch a lot of games from the substitutes’ bench but when he got his chance against Bournemouth he showed everyone what he is capable of.

“He works really hard with our goalkeeper coach Dave Timmins and I’m sure if he keeps that up he will continue to improve as a player."

Mooney, who stands at 6'9" tall, was one of five players offered new contracts by Rovers boss Ronnie Moore at the end of the campaign.

Club legend Ian Goodison has already signed a new twelve-month deal, whilst midfield maestro Andy Robinson will sign up over the coming weeks.

However, with Zoumana Bakayogo and Owain fon Williams expected to snub their offers and Rovers yet to make any new signings, Moore has moved to assure fans that transfer activity will pick up towards the end of the month.

"We’ve been talking to a lot of players and agents over the last couple of months," he continued.

"With pre-season training not far away I expect clubs and players will start making decisions and there will be a lot more activity.”

Moores tone does not give the impression that anything is secure yet, In terms of players coming here. I had rather hoped that both Lowe and Foster would be nailed on deals.

A few surprises in store I think. Probably losing Fonners and Akpro and maybe Ash Taylor if the web rumours are to be believed

Good move this as did well against Bournemouth, but will probably need another keeper as think Fon likely to leave.

Give Mooney a chance but get rid of Timmins (coach).Mooney was a replica of Fon Williams in the one match hw played. Too predictable. and too slow with everything >Has great potential.Give him a chance Ronni

Yeah let's get rid of former England number 1's goalkeeping coach and he is one of the reasons why he is one of the best keepers in the world today - makes perfect sense (Sm161).Also without Timmins at tranmere Fon would of left by now because he is good friends with Timmins according to Ronnie Moore.
