Rovers dominated the opening period of the game and eventually took a deserved lead on the half hour mark through on loan Everton defender Matthew Pennington's bullet header from Jason Koumas' superb corner. Although Crewe broke forward well in numbers, they lacked the clinical touch and Rovers held on relatively comfortably for a deserved and much needed three points.
