Tranmere's reported Managerial target Gary Mills has left Gateshead FC to join Wrexham as their new Manager.......

After rumours at the end of last week and early this week about being a potential target for Rovers as their new Manager, Gateshead FC have this evening confirmed that Manager Gary Mills has left the Club but will join Wrexham as their new Manager.

Former Nottingham Forest player Mills had received an offer from the Dragons recently following the departure of Kevin Wilkin after Wrexham's FA Trophy Final defeat to North Ferriby United but and was believed to have been in talks with the Welsh Club.  On Friday however it was confirmed by Gateshead and Mills that a Football League Club, reported to be Tranmere has also made an enquiry.

Mills Gary

It is reported that Mills held talk with Rovers yesterday but this afternoon, despite no confirmation yet from Wrexham themselves, Gateshead FC released a statement confirming that Mills would be leaving the Heed to join Wrexham as their new boss.

The Offical Gateshead FC statement on their Official Website said...

"Gateshead can confirm that first-team manager Gary Mills has left the club and has accepted the vacant managerial position at Wrexham.  Mills arrived at the International Stadium in September 2013, guiding the Heed to a third-place finish in his first season in charge."

"His last game at the helm came at Barnet on Saturday, with Gateshead ending the 2014/15 campaign in tenth-place in the Vanarama Conference.  The club will announce a new manager in due course.  There will be no further comment from the club at this stage."

Tranmere's search for a new Manager therefore goes on and we will bring you news of the appointment as soo nas we have it here on Total Tranmere.

He only managed a 10th place finish this season, so maybe he's not that great anyway?

Back to the short list it is then.

Got to be a few more candidates who are just as capable, if not better?

Seriously though? Why would anyone choose Wrexham over Tranmere Rovers? Wrexham must be paying this guy well over the odds for his services?

time to move on, and if we appoint a manager without any experience of the conference it will be suicide

Maybe he didn't fancy the pressure and choose the easier option?

He has certainly had talks with us.

It would be advantageous but to call it ''suicide'' is way OTT

I was talking to league 2 player last week. He told me that in the 'football circle' our fans are notorious for getting on the players backs. I'm thinking we are not going to be the atractive proposition we may think. He also went on to say him and his team mates predicted we would struggle based on the signings we made before the season started

Rumour has it that Palios wanted him to push for promotion in the first season, but Wrexham said mid table was fine. Mills went with what he knew best, much to the disappointment of many of our fans.

Expectations are much higher here than at Wrexham - he would be given more time there.

It's all about opinions and I disagree.

The majority of fans Rovers or otherwise, will forgive a lot of things but, lack of effort, commitment, bottle or whatever you want to call it is not acceptable.

Considering what has been served up particularly this season, our supporters have generally been very supportive until some of the recent home capitulations.

Our initial signings were not great but, we should not have found ourselves relegated especially after MA first 13 games in charge.

Hindsight as ever is a wonderful thing.

You can't sign much with a tiny budget and little backing.

Interesting point, and I'd have to say a fair one. We do have a tendency to get on the players' backs, we are vocal in expressing our dissatisfaction, however when the players put in the effort and play well we also support them vocally too.

I never thought we'd do anything but struggle this season but didn't expect it to be as bad as it turned out. A lot of our fans, some on here too, seemed to think we should walk Lge2 because it was a poor standard. No doubt there will be similar sentiments expressed at the start of next season.

sat in the jk stand (center circle) once this season v morcambe. Unbelievable. The heckling was constant we couldn't string 4 passes together without screams of "get it forward". My friends from morcambe couldn't believe it I must say it was at times embarassing.

On Newsnow, Mills says he was one of two managers in the frame. Maybe he wasn't convinced he was going to be offered?

If the comment is accurate, should be hearing the result of a one horse race imminently.

Only if the 'one horse' decides to pass the winning post.

I don't agree with that. A manager with a half decent record in league 2, or LOW, the two Irish top flight leagues, or the Scottish championship or someone who got a team promoted or top 2 in the scottish div 1 and 2 could be good.

Maybe even a manager that got a promotion or a top 4 in french ligue 4 or 5 might be a proposition. Knowledge of foreign leagues, successful, but not at a level higher than Tranmere were this season and not necessarily at a club with a better budget, as foreign managers are rapidly becoming the must have accessory for some chair people.

Maybe even an experienced coach like the assistant at Bayern II, or Barcelona B, if he would step away from B team German or Spanish football, to become an actual manager, with possibly a bit less salary and the option of a couple of good young foreign loanees coming in, or again knowledge of foreign leagues to bolster recruitment.

Sounds a bit pie in the sky the last paragraph, but at the very least Palios could do worse than explore the option a bit, with a few phone calls just to ascertain potential cost, as it would depend on what those clubs will pay some assistant or coach of a good B team, versus what the manager would get, as I doubt Bayerns B team assistant would expect several mil a year, or he could naff off.

It wouldn't harm Tranmere to at least entertain such ideas, because as long as you get a manager who could challenge for top spot, would it matter if it was some guy with good league 2 or conference experience, some guy with good NI premiership experience, or a guy who coached at ligue 4 level in France, who could bring in a couple of tasty young French players

The only people you'd write off are obvious no-no's, like a manager being promoted from west cheshire second division, or a NW counties premier league team coach, with a year or two's coaching experience.

Even someone like Peter Reid's brother at Warrington could look like a possible plus point, as he did well with them this season and he's a no nonsense kind of guy, who probably wouldn't tolerate lack of application and any sulky player cowing about the lack of games.

Hopefully Palios will explore what he feels are the right options now, move on from Mills and bring in a new guy fast, but if he gets a guy who can be top 3-4 after 10 games, I don't care whether he's got conference experience, or he won the Guatamala or Malawi top flight title, as I'd settle for a good manager with conference promotion credentials, so I'm not fussy, even if he's foreign and gets Tranmere promoted with a couple of Nicaraguan internationals in the team, or Guinea Bassau's star striker then great.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

It sounds like there is already someone in talks with M.P as Mills clearly states it was between him and another unnamed manager, that's why he chose Wrexham.

I agree with Matt. Don't see it matters, only time says if it's right decision, not what we think before anybody is even in the door. Shout is Mills wasn't offered job as MP didn't like him. Gary Brabben massive chance but he left conference Southport to join Everton youth so?? It's good speculating to maintain an interest but who forecast Edwards? Could end up with another one who comes on the blind side. Don't think we'll have long to wait.
