7 sleeps until the end of the window, apathy mounts

We were all, if truth be told, looking forward to the current transfer window. The chance to freshen up the squad, move out some dead wood, shift up a gear in the second half of the season. Yet, at the time of writing, it's been far from exciting, and a bit worrying.

We've seen players go, most notably Elliott Nevitt and loanee Simeu, and a couple of players arrive, Brad Walker on a permanent deal and Dundee Ute's Logan Chalmers on loan. Yet we haven't seen the most needed area strengthened, our forwards. Nor have we seen a sufficient clear out of passengers to suggest that a major squad restructuring is under way.

Rumours abound, but non seem to have much substance. Norwood wanted to come back in the Summer; Cook was considering a move from Bradford; Ronaldo nearly signed but thought the takeaways on Borough Road fell below his desired standard. We can take all of these things with a dollop of salt.

Each day we are linked with 'promising' signings. New strikers in Ireland, old pros that other clubs are letting go to make room for others on their wages bill. Each time  expectations rise, fans frantically check websites, Facebook and other digital sources and then pffff, nothing. I suspect that there is a problem in the current squad which is causing this. Our current crop of players are unable to remember names unless the player is called Josh or Kane. Consequently our transfer activity has been limited to finding players who will fit in to this system. This is what having a top third budget, or is it top half, looks like. The perpetual search for players that will fit in.

Meanwhile, other clubs around us have been more active. In fact the hibernating tortoise in my garden shed has been more active. It would almost be impossible to be less active, but there is a week left, we must be in for a surprise. The trouble is that the surprise might be making do with what we've got. Micky is in the last 6 months of his contract, would you risk allowing him to sign players with the possibility that he might disappear in the summer? No, me neither. Then again if the club want to keep Mellon as manager I suspect they are not sending out the most positive of messages.

A week left, plus a few hours. Who knows, the excitement might be all to come.

Whilst nothing is ever certain, the ins and outs look to have improved the squad. So the seven days were worth the wait.
