Sheffield Wednesday's highly rated midfielder Glenn Whelan has emerged as a shock January target for Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson as the Trotters chief looks for reinforcements to pull his side away from the Premier League relegation zone.

Megson was in the stands at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon to watch the Irishman put in a man of the match display against Southampton and a move in the winter window could be in the offing.

Whelan, who's previous clubs include Manchester City and Bury, is out of contract in the summer and is yet to pledge his future to the Yorkshire club who currently lie 16th in the Championship and four points above the relegation zone.

Last season he was the Owls player of the year and he has also captained the side on numerous occasions since making the Free Transfer move from City in 2004.

Up to press Whelan has made over 130 appearances for Wednesday and Megson is understood to have followed the 23-year old's progress closely in recent times.
