Ghana World Cup star John Mensah has completed his return to Sunderland on another year long loan deal.

The 'Rock of Gibraltar', as Mensah is also known as, had a successful spell on Wearside last year, making 18 appearances.

Mensah, 27, was one of the stars of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as he captained Ghana to the quarter finals before the Black Stars lost on penalties to Uruguay.

The stylish defender has also previously represented Genoa, Chievo, Modena and Rennes prior to moving to Lyon for €8.4 million in July 2008.

A hugely popular figure amongst both players and fans, Mensah will be hoping to secure a place when Sunderland host Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light this Saturday.
