Ahead of this afternoons game at Goodison,Moyes talks about Wayne Rooney...
David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney has matured and gained a greater understanding of Everton's part in his development.
The Toffees entertain Manchester United at Goodison in Saturday’s early kick-off. Rooney has proved a talisman for the men from Old Trafford this term - leading some in the media to suggest he is currently the best player in the world.
That is an assessment Moyes does not agree with – although he is convinced it is a status Rooney will one day achieve.
"I think Wayne is a top player, he is a good player and I think he is going to be a great player," said Moyes.
"He has added goals to his game now, he has added maturity to it, understanding, all the things that you would expect to come from a maturing player and he is certainly a maturing player throughout now.
"I think time will be the test if he becomes the best in the world. I think he has got a bit to do yet but he is certainly getting very close to it."
After a fractious relationship following the publication of Wayne Rooney's book, the Everton manager has revealed the striker has since telephoned him to personally apologise for comments made.
"Things with Wayne were slightly difficult but I have got to say all credit to Wayne because he 'phoned me up a year ago to apologise for the things he had written in his book.
"I think that was something that made me realise maybe there is a maturing boy and a maturing man," Moyes continued.
"He realised that what he had been given at Everton was great and his development was the right thing and what we had tried to do was right. We have done the same with Jack Rodwell and we are doing the same with Dan Gosling.
"All in all I think Wayne would probably look back at his time at Everton as good.”
Moyes has also suggested Everton would now be better prepared to deal with the emergence of a player of Rooney’s calibre.
He concluded: "We probably weren't ready for Wayne Rooney at the time. I think we would be more ready for him now than we were then."

I can understand to a certain extent why you give him so much abuse... after all Everton lad through and through, but left as soon as we came in for him... but you gotta remember sommat else as well... if the Everton board didnt want to sell they didnt have to... at the end of the day ££££ is what football is all about... look at my beloved club...
I just think you vented all your anger at Rooney, and should have vented it at the board equally coz they ultimately set a price and we paid it.
Rooney is one of the hardest grafters on the pitch... and i have never seen a player with so much desire and commitment... and yes he is scoring a lot of more goals in the 6 yard box... but who cares... as long as he keeps scoring for us they can be 20 yarders or toe pokers on the line for me... but i think his game has improved so much since Ronaldo has left our club.. see another player that ultimately has there price... football is business nowadays and thats sommat we gotta get used to... for the likes of Everton and United.
We have a pleasant respect for you Scouse Blues here in Manchester... coz you always give us a good game, and play in the right way... committed and play some decent stuff..
Just think the more you get on Rooneys back... the more it will be a positive for Rooney and for United... coz it eggs him on... fires him up to do even better...
Rooney and Moyes have made up and started a clean slate... now i think its time for the Goodison faithful to do the same... and be proud of what you produced in your academy, a fantastic young football in Wayne Rooney.

Maybe I did not make myself clear. I am not saying Rooney is overrated as a player, just that this season I think he has been. I am actually not that bitter about him leaving at all and understood his reasons for going, especially since his relationship with Moyes wasn't the best.
Now, the media and pundits have all had this obsession with Rooney becoming this 30 goal a season goalscorer. I said in the past that a player like Rooney doesn't need to be. He averaged 20 goals a season in the past and got around 12 assists a season. That is a brilliant record and it showed what I used to argue that Rooney is about more than just goals and that his stats were more than good enough said he was about more than that.
Now being a 'goalscorer' doesn't make you the best player in the world. That is what people can't grasp. Being a regular goalscorer AND in those goals scoring from anywhere and everywhere does. Was RVN called the best in the world when he scored 40 odd goals for you that season? No, because so many of his goals were just tap ins and pretty unspectacular. Likewise with Rooney, how many goals has he scored this season where people have gone 'wow. What a goal'. Probably only a few at best. Now the media have got what they wanted, which is for Rooney to becoming that 30 goals a season goalscorer. Problem is, his all round play isn't as good. I have seen his all round player been better in previous seasons. And I know this because I have continued to watch and fo

Rooney has had to become that scorer which we need... as nobody else is doing it... we would prob be mid table if it wasnt for his amount of goals.
Berbatov is lazy...prob produces about half a dozen games a season mate... so where Rooney was creating last season (mainly for Ronaldo)... he has now had to become that goal poacher type of player..
If he can get the right mix of playmaker/goalscorer (whatever type of goals that be), that is when i think he will become number 1 in the world...
He is a forward... not an attacking midfielder, so i do have to stick up for him in certain aspects.... as i think assists as a forward are a bonus... and the goals are what matters.
We will agree and disagree on things mate.. lets just hope he can get us the goals to a World Cup Win in summer...
Anyway... sommat we can agree on is... the farcical goings on at Anfield... quality this season... the fat spanish waiter has proper lost it.. the rumours are that he is being lined up to be citys new manager in the summer and that will get them Torres (sicknote)... should be funny to see even more misery inflicted on the shankly mob hey...
