Swansea own goal saves Fulham's blushes
Nevland gets a start
February 15 2009
A close fought game in Swansea ends in a one all draw. Fulham arrived at Liberty Stadium at even odds with Swansea's home advantage making a win a tricky task. Swansea were actually the bookies' favourites, following an impressive display against reigning Cup holders Portsmouth. Fulham entered the fray with a less than impressive away record this season.
Fulham's only away wins this season have come in the F.A. Cup aganst West Brom and Kettering. Swansea was to be a sterner test. The home side started brightly with a good opportunity from Gower hitting the post and scrambled into the hands of Schwarzer. Fulham seemed to struggle in the rest of the half and didn't really test The Swan's Goalie. The next best chance fell to Gower again who was left open and shot the ball towards the Fulham goal. Schwarzer made a good save to ensure that Swansea would not score in the first half.
The break for the Whites came just before the half time whistle when Konchesky struck a great corner and after some suspect goalkeeping the ball hit the unlucky Swansea Captain Monk and into his own net. The half time beak didn't help Fulham's efforts either and after Jason Scotlands impressive goal The Whites were left looking at a draw. The final quarter was great to watch, but didn't yield a winning goal.
I felt Fulham really played poorly today. The midfield seemed disorganised and the forwards only managed two shots on goal. Nobody wins with a total of two shots either on or off goal. The defence made a couple of glaring errors which allowed 3 great attempts on goal, one of which went in. The poor defensive diaplay was mainly down to the midfield, with Simon Davies guilty of giving up the run back and taking up ball-watchingfor a hobby. The Midfield generally were off form and must do better.
As per the Superfulham 3 Stars, well it's a bit difficult after a poor display but here goes
* No one stood out I'm afraid - Suggestions?
** Brede Hangeland - Kept the defence together, and led by example
*** Mark Schwarzer - Reliable as usual and stopped a couple of great shots on goal
Superfulham Man of the Match - Mark Schwarzer
