Villa v Hull match Report: Carew Goal Downs Tigers
By Eye Of The Tiger
May 9 2009
The Tigers failed to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation zone as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on Monday evening. John Carew scored the only goal of the game 11 minutes before half time.
City started brightly and went close in the second minute when Ashbee volleyed just wide after a brief spell of pressure.
It was then Villa's turn to increase the tempo.
Kamil Zayatte had to turn Luke Young's cross behind and after half-clearing the initial corner, City defended the second ball in.
Ashbee and James Milner both needed treatment following a crunching tackle in the sixth minute.
The City skipper appeared to come off worse and although he initially returned to the action, he was soon replaced by Marney with Boateng taking the captain's armband.
Moments later, John Carew headed just wide of the post.
Michael Turner's foul gave Villa a free kick 20 yards from goal in the 25th minute, but Myhill did well to tip Milner's shot over.
Villa took the lead on 34 minutes.
Boateng lost the ball on the edge of the Villa box, allowing Gareth Barry to break away.
He fed Ashley Young on the left and when he crossed, Carew was in acres of space to finish past Myhill.
Gabriel Agbonlahor missed a good chance to put his side further ahead in added time after giving Zayatte the slip, but Myhill tipped the striker's shot over at his near post.
Half Time: Tigers 0-1 Villa
City made a change at half time with Barmby replacing Geovanni.
The second half started as the first had ended with Villa in control, Barry going close with a right-foot shot that Myhill did well to turn behind.
After Milner had cut through the midfield he fired in a low shot that Myhill did well to beat away.
City's final change came with 17 minutes to go as Manucho replaced Kevin Kilbane.
Kamil Zayatte picked up the first yellow card of the game for bringing down Agbonlahor.
From the free kick, Zat Knight nodded the ball across goal for Agbonlahor, who was denied by a wonderful save from Myhill.
City managed an attempt on target 78 minutes when a Sam Ricketts cross found Cousin, but his weak effort was held by Brad Friedel.
The away side were lifted by that and from Dawson's in-swinging free kick, Cousin's header was stopped on the line by Friedel.
Boateng was booked for a foul on Knight while Villa replaced Carew with Emile Heskey with four minutes remaining.
City were now at least applying some pressure and Friedel was again called into the action, this time to keep out Manucho's stoppage time header.
Three late corners saw Myhill thrown up front, but they came to nothing and City were beaten.
